Nope, I mean gates blocking the pass.

I think they were part of the phokian wall.

Ah, the 3 narrower parts of the pass were called gates
and the spartans defended the middle gate, where the phokian wall was located.

Indeed, there were three narrow passages, three physical gates, and a wall blocking the middle passage. The Greeks repaired it and used it to better defend the passage. However they quickly passed from defense to offense using the 300 Spartans to move back and forward fooling the Persians that they supposedly were withdrawing and then moving forward again into the narrow passage massacring the Persians

A little of both, really. It doesn't trouble me that much (I expect mythmaking in movies), but weren't the Spartans essentially the forerunners of the modern police state? And I KNOW they humped little boys.

This might surprise you but apart from treating helots more or less like slaves, Spartans can be accused to be more moderate and progressive in many aspects than other Greek states like Corinth or Athens, or even other civilizations. It's all written, all you have to do is read and make your conclusions.

I'll take your word on this. I guess you KNOW from first hand. I just wonder who you were back then? The Spartan or the boy?

I went to the midnight showing of the 300 last night. It was good, it felt very much like a I was watching a moving graphic novel moreso than watching a movie. Great visuals, good dialouge, lots of carnage, but it's violence left me feeling only ambivalent instead of euphoric. It's missing something visceral that both braveheart and gladiator had. I'd give it an 8 or 8.5 stars out of 10.
