  • I failed my driving test... Comfort me.

48 weeks after I applied for it, the Irish government finally granted me a driving test. Yes, 48 weeks; despite the advancement of the Celtic Tiger it can still feel like living in a Banana Republic at times.

So, I failed my test because apparently I have something in common with Derek Zoolander (besides being really, really, really ridiculously good looking). I'm not an ambiturner. 6 of my 14 faults (you're allowed 9) were for turning left. For some reason my right turns are perfect, but I can't turn left. I know it sounds petty, but I feel the guy had already made up in his mind to fail me before we had even started out. Back to the drawing board I guess.

How exactly does one turn left incorrectly?

Do you see the "line" correctly?

Is turning right is easier for you because you see the inside of the curve?

Do you focus on the inside of the curve as well if you turn left? If that's the case, it's possible that you misjudge it because you're on right-hand side drive. You could try focusing on the outside of curve when choosing your steering moment.

They are supposed to drive on the left, but on some roads the distinction is moot.

I thought that was originally a Shakespear line only it ended in "England", not "Ireland".

After looking it up it was indeed written by Shakespeare, about England not Ireland, and was from the play Richard II (Act 2, Scene 1).

                    It originally went :

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
                    This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

And here is the modern version.

This rank throng of morons, this septic pile,
This heap of lowliness, this feat of ours,
                    This other Hades, pandemonium,
This shack built by Politics for itself
Against redemption and the rule of law,
This wretched gang of men, this mighty herd,
This worthless rock amidst the slimy sea,
Which serves neither sovereign task to forestall
Nor lost and defamed duty to preserve
Against the claims for just inclusion in
This cursed blot, this heap, this wreck, this England.

...but more seriously, at least you failed on the driving part of the test. That's a bit harder than the written test, and I **** you not, I've seen people fail that 10 question common sense test.

40 questions in Ireland. It's still common sense though.
