The Crappy iPod Nano

I bought an iPod Nano yesterday.

I plug it in, Windows detects it (via My Computer), iTunes does not, Updater does not.

Scour the Internet and Apple.com for answers, try everything, nothing worked.

Come into office, plug it in, works. Great, now I update it - good.

I transfer a song via iTunes, I check my iPod (which constantly says Do Not Disconnect, which is damn annoying), song cannot be found anywhere.

Plug it back into computer, iTunes can no longer detect it, updater can.


Come on, what is the deal here? I buy any product, even crappy ones, they work, but I buy an expensive APPLE product, and I have so much crap to go through, and there are still no solutions?

Oh, and the iPod Nano box clearly states it can play video's, so I downloaded an iPod trailer from quicktime.com, I put it into iTunes, I try to transfer it to the iPod Nano, and lo and behold it does not let me.

This is not acceptable.

If it can play video, it isn't an iPod Nano.

Did you follow the instructions for installing and formatting it?

Go to Apple's Support Discussions and see if anyone else has the same problem. Yours is not normal. Most Windows users have no problems with the iPod.

Or better still, why don't you call Apple and have a tech walk you through it. It won't cost you anything at all.

There is also online help. Details should be in your manual. I'm guessing that there's a software conflict with your Windows machine at home.

Call them. They have the best support in the industry and they'll be happy to help you out.

People with supposedly vastly less technical knowledge than him have no trouble with their iPods.

If it's a real iPod, then Apple will be happy to take Snoopy's call. They consistently rate as the best support in the industry.

iTunes recognizing that you have the iPod plugged in is flaky for me too. Start up iTunes and then plug in your iPod. iTunes should recognize it then.

Really, this is the only annoyance to the gear. Pretty remarkably simple.

The problem is that you didnt ask Steve Jobs permission and use the "secret sign" before you plugged it in. As a result, you've violated the apple end-user agreement and it'll never work until you confess your sins while kissing SJ's ass.

It sounds like a software conflict – Apple can't possibly test on every single vendor's Wintel machines. But Apple's support will do their best to get it working, and once it's going you shouldn't have to worry.

If the updater can detect it, you should do the update and then see what happens.

Whatever happens, you can always wipe it and return it to its new state (I can't remember the buttons to do that as I've never had to).

But make sure you don't press "pause", "skip", "menu", "menu", "pause" and "skip". Not in that order, at least. Otherwise, you'll trigger the auto-destruct sequence. The plastique charge, even though its quite small, can kill you.
