Well done, rumpo kid! The empasis on a modern military is convincing. With only six civilizations in the game being in 5th place wasn't too good, even if we are not up to something. (Are we?)

My policy against worker unemployment in the middle game is to have them build useless roads (not on unimproved squares though, because I'm afraid that would prevent forest expansion).

So after Rumpo the First will it be Grandpa Troll the Second? (My history book says that the first Vizier named Grandpa Troll served from 2400 BC to 2040 BC.)

As to military upgrading, I normally play builder stylee and I always find this period dangerous (it's the transfer from doing one style of war to doing a different style which encourages the AI I think) so I elected to preempt any agression. If anybody wants to start something we should be able to finish it. Know what I mean? (Sorry about the atitude - just finished watching Sexy Beast on telly and I think I've caught some of the spirit.)

As to the workers, whereas I think you have a point Verrucosus I thought that they might enjoy a great big 'pee-up' until the discovery of railways (well I come from three generations of trade unionists - what do you expect?)

Anyways, give 'em hell Grandpa!

I wil play the next 10 turns, i think the best strat for modernizing our army, is t delete old units unless they have uber exp, and whip in fresh recruits while running vassalige and theocracy, (taking a page out of Blake's book) but i will keep continuity with the current strategy of gold mongering. and continue to build up navy for a possible invasion of rome
