This news item reminded me of this blurb:

    Recycling Tanks

It is every citizen's final duty to go into the tanks and
become one with all the people.

    "Ethics for Tomorrow"
I think I remember someone once arguing that the Hive was too exaggerated to represent communism in SMAC, but I'm not so sure.

(Yep, I'm willfully ignoring that this news item might be untrue, and that whatever political system China has might not qualify as 'real' communism.)
I'm a slacker, hear me snore...

Hee hee, this thread concerning this is in the OTF.

And the Hive isn't communism. The Hive is the best faction on Planet.

cool making em repay their debt to society
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

I'm pretty sure that the Recycling Tanks aren't like Soylent Green or anything gross like that. It's more like this:

The corpse is rendered and seperated into its component parts: organs, skin, bones, brains, undigested food, and so on. Each is used for different products, depending on the need. For the most part, though, and for the purposes of the game, the bodies can be said to be converted into fertalizer for the hydroponic farms, water for drinking (hey, we drink purified water from all kinds of sources), and the organ bank.

Where did you think the skin and tissue for unnecessary tissue engineering procedures came from? Volunteers?

Ah, I didn't think to look anywhere but in the SMAC forums, because I instantly connected this to the chairman's quote regarding recycling tanks. And now that I managed to track down the thread in the OT forum I noticed that SMAC wasn't brought up in it. So...phew!
