For OS X.
"The most secure operating system", OS X, has a new patch fixing an impressive 44 security flaws.http://news.com.com/Apple+unloads+do...l?tag=nefd.top
Some of these flaws are extremely serious, like how opening a simple .RTF (rich text file) can use a buffer overflow that permits "arbitrary code" to run on the system (ie, virus, spyware, worm, whatever).
Similarly, clicking on a malicious link in Safari bypasses all security checks and allows the hacker to run arbitrary commands (including rm -rf / theoretically).
Yet another in Apple's "Server Manager D" -- it uses a buffer overflow to allow remote execution of arbitrary code without any user interaction.
Can we all agree that the reason OS X has no viruses has little to do with the code, and everything to do with its irrelevance in the marketplace?

I'm not that sure Windows is male. If you consider all those penetrations it has suffered, it must be a female working in the oldest known trade.

Maybe windows is a gay man???

Huh ? IMO The funniest part about this is that Asher loves Firefox, which is invulnerable in part because its marketshare is low aswell.

Firefox is not invulnerable, and anyone who claims that is clueless.Originally posted by Wiglaf

What is it up to now , 8-9%? And by invulnerable I meant invulnerable relative to IE, quite clearly
I will be the first to admit I have no idea what I am talking about but I think I am right about this.

If Microsoft gets it right, the new version of Windows won't suffer nearly as many of these problems. Expect Asher to crow about it, even though it will effectively refute the argument that he's been making (without any real evidence) for three or four years now.

Funnily enough , the Zotob worm ( which affects Windows ) has just hit the news networks' networks . And it affects unpatched 2000 , Server 2003 , and XP boxes .

I was laughing about that in an earlier post. It took down all the computers at CNN.

Unpatched Windows 2000 boxes are the only ones really affected (can be hit without user login and remotely).Originally posted by aneeshm

Unpatched Windows XP boxes require user credentials (remote login).
Unpatched Windows XP SP2 (and Windows 2003) boxes require both user credentials and a local login only.
Several of the vulnerabilities addressed by Apple's latest patch are far worse (in that several of them don't require logins and work remotely), but there's just no worm built for them -- what's the point, so you can take out 3 emo kid's porn computers?
The last strangehold of Apple -- the media -- has moved to Windows, too.![]()

Patently ridiculous argument you make, again.Originally posted by Agathon

The argument is that popular operating systems get targeted for viruses and worms more. It's a common sense argument constantly backed up by facts.
The new Windows worm in the press exploits a vulnerability rated "moderate" in severity by Securina, and several of the vulnerabilities fixes in the latest OS X patch are rated "extremely critical" by Securina. That's because the Windows vulnerability was remotely exploitable without a user account on only Windows 2000 machines, while the multiple MacOS X vulnerabilities occur across all supported MacOS X platforms.
Windows and MacOS X both have had multiple security vulnerabilities that can be executed remotely without logging in -- the question of why only Windows vulnerabilities are actively exploited is what we're left with.
And the answer is obvious -- the world runs on Windows. 100% of the World's Mac computers could die today and no one but the Maccies would know it. If 10% of the Windows computers died, it's a huge event.
The logic is amazingly simple, repeatedly shown by example (today is perfect as an example), and it's one that you and Urban Ranger refuse to fathom -- Urban Ranger because he's a brainwashed Stallman zealot and you because you're under Jobs' reality distortion field. There's not much to say aside from you look like a fool when you deny the obvious.
