With all these great looking units we definitely need a civil war scenario...

Your right there my friend. The American Civil War is the last great historical era that is relativley untouched by Civilization II. There have been a couple famous versions, the original Civ II Scenario's expansion disc version, Captain Nemo's groud breaking version and most recently Fairline's updated version of Nemo's.

Still, it has seen far less interest than WW2 of course, for at any given moment there are at least three WW2 scenario's in development here at Apolyton. Heck, Steph alone has made five versions of the First World War, when you throw in Kaiser you have no shortage of Great War scenario's to choose from. Pablo's given us the best Spanish Civil War scenario, though there are a handfull of others to choose from. There have been a couple based on the Boer War, the era of African Expansion, Brown Man's Burden and such. There have even been some great modern games about the global imperialistic expansion of the late nineteench century and early twentieth in Imperialism 1870 and La Belle Epoque. Yet the American Civil War remains relativley untouched territoriy for Civ II designers.

Hopefully your right Leonidas and that will all soon change .

Well, the initial two Civ scenarios were World War II and the Romans.

It looks like we're gradually working our way up and down the timeline from these two points.

With the ability to upgrade the graphics for civ2 scenarios, and with some of the latest new art coming out, I will never tire of playing civ2.

Most of the newer games coming out now with all the latest graphics still don't have that elusive "one last turn" feel that I get from playing civ2.

This is quite something to say after all the years that civ2 has been out on the market.

Needless to say this has saved me quite a bit of money.

Even civ3, while a good game, still doesn't have that hold on me as does civ2. And with civ4 moving to 3D ( ) and presumably with mega sys requirements ( ), I will be sticking to civ2.

Just recently, I have been playing some amazing civ2 scenarios that have kept me glued to the computer. I'm currently playing a crusade scenario (in which I modded some of the graphics and gameplay) after having seen Kingdom of Heaven. That movie really got me in the mood to play a crusade scenario.

What other game can offer us the sheer breadth and depth of gameplay and history as civ2 can?

Hopefully, a great civil war scenario will soon be in the making

3D just doesn't make sense for strategy games, since the graphics are by necessity an abstraction. That is why Civ2's graphics are still the best of all the versions, they are easy to understand but have an evocative feel of a medieval tapestry or court painting.

You nailed it dead on Smiley and Leonidas, nearly a decade of progress later and the industry programers have yet to truly improve on what they got right back in 1995 with the release of Civilization II.

My god, imagine if we at this forum could be in charge of the development of Civilization IV, the potential is limitless. You'd see space for hundreds of units, a near infinate tech tree, endless events space and the more diverse terrains imaginable. What would make it truly great is the fact that all would be easily edited in simple text files and graphic files, nothing Notepad, Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro couldn't handle.

Sigh.... a man can dream .

In any case, if a ToT version of Imperialism is in the works then perhaps this unitset might come in handy. It features the infantry units of the european powers in the year 1870.

I hope CIV4 lives up what it is promising...We might one day see all the classics on that format!

I'm Waiting for strategic command 2, hopefully there will actually be room for good units, strategic command 1's units size is 28x28,
I still like it beacause it takes a number of turns to kill a unit, and you can keep reinforcing it so that it never gets killed

Great looking units. It seems they just get better and better

Is there any possibility that all these units could also be done for civ2 MGE?

    I agree.

3D, while it looks good for water and some other things, actually makes a lot of other stuff in games look worse (usualy the units look like cardboard), especially when zoomed in.

This drive to do games in the latest graphics, to keep up with the latest computer power, is only adding marginally to the look of a game while driving the cost of computer upgrades through the roof.

For example, compare the graphics of Age of Kings (in 2D) with Age of Mythology (in 3D). I actually like the 2D graphics in AoK better. It all looks more natural.

Alas, you would think that over time games would get better; in fact many are made worse. Again compare HoM&M3 to version 4. Now HoM&M5 is going 3D.

Also, when we see what can be done with the civ2 event engine, compare this even with civ3. No contest. The event engine in civ2 is so versatile, I still think we have not used its full capability yet.

Whenever I am in the mood to play a certain period of history, I always know there is a civ2 scenario somewhere that has been done on that period. Many of the scenarios could actually be called complete games in their own right (like Red Front).

Only now is a wargame such as Strategic Command 2 actually using an event engine similar to civ2. In fact, if you check out some the screenshots of the SC2, they actually look like civ2.

It seems that the 'ol classics still cannot be beat...

Just thought I'd bump this highly deserving thread back up to the top of the screen with a new contribution. Prior to the great crash of '05 wasn't this thread always at the top of the forum?

Anyways, here we have some MGE units from one of my favorite periods, the "Race for Africa" of the late nineteenth century. Featured is a French Colonial Troop, a French Regular, a French Legionaire, a British Regular, a Royal Marine, an Italian Regular, a Portuguese Regular, an Abyssinian Regular, and a Turkish Regular.

The shared units in the lower corner are a European Sharpshooter, a Colonial Sharpshooter, an Impis, a Mercenary Leader and finally a Mercenary Rifleman. These are all modifications of units produced by both Gareth and Steph alike, with elements produced by Curt, Tom and many others.

    Fantastic stuff!

Are Tom and yourself intending this for the redux of Brown Man's Burden?

Thankyou Steph, these wouldn't have been possible without your original Civil War mod of one of Curt's WW2 Infantry units.

To answer your question Typhoon, no these were not intended for use in any scenario in particular but were rather something I put together as I'm trying to cover all periods of nineteenth century warfare with this new style of infantry. You see I've been on a Strongbad'esque style rampage as of late.... a unit making rampage that is .

Now just so that nobody gets the idea in they're head that Jules Verne is abandoned, I have for you this little preview. The attatched units below are a European merchant, an Islamic Merchant as well as the advanced steam powered freight truck. Look for all these to appear in..... "The World of Jules Verne".

I do apologize for the lengthliness of Verne's development and the fact I haven't given much in the way of updates as of late. Rest assured more is to come in the future.

Why thankyou, as I said there will be allot more where that came from in the days ahead. I'm going to be redoing most of the infantry units as a new style of infantry has taken the community by storm thanks to the works of Master Curt and Master Steph. As we can see in the figure attatched below this community continues to push the bounderies of what is possible in Civization II graphics.

Hot damn Steph those are looking just great!! The other day I was trying to figure out whether or not this next installment could be considered your third Great War project based on Turtledove's "How Few Remain" series or just an updated version of the second. "Highway to Hell" was the first obviously, then came "Great War: Walk in Hell" which can be considered a new scenario as it had a different rules.txt, units and featured a new map. Now this game will feature a new rules.txt and units but the map will be the same. Just curious what your opinion is on that one Steph.

Also, have you ever considered trying to get in touch with Mr. Turtledove through a fan site or something to that effect to show him the scenario? I'm sure he's never heard of Civilzation II but I'm sure he'd be impressed with the work fans like you have done.

In the interest of bumping this thread up to the top again, I've compiled a set of 26 units I had originally put together for a graphical update of the Civ II classic Imperialism.

The farmer and engineer unit are both based on the WW2 engineer Gareth produced for Dictator ToT, and all the infantry are based on the British Infantry unit from River War 4.0. The cavalry units have been modified slightly from they're original poses and include new horses drawn by Gareth.

The only other unit requiring explaniation is the Zulu unit, which is based on the Sioux unit by HT used in Gold Gultch.

Friends, I need your help. I'm in urgent need of the apropriate updated models of the below pictured units for the update of Brown Man's Burden for the Test of Time platform.

They are a steamer (a sort of patrol craft), a protected cruiser, an armored cruiser, a battleship and finally a torpedo boat.

Again if anyone can be of ANY help I would be most appreciative.
