I wonder if the market will continue to support three platforms. I couldn't do five nor four and Nintendo is looking weak right now. Will there be enough competition with only two makers?

It's that time again.

MS, Sony pick 16 May for next-gen console launches
By Tony Smith
Published Monday 11th April 2005 12:42 GMT
The waiting will be over on 16 May. On that day, at 3PM PST, Sony will take the wraps off PlayStation 3. Three hours later, Microsoft will unveil Xbox 2.
Well, that's the hope. Certainly, Sony has scheduled a press event at its Culver City, Los Angeles Sony Pictures facility on that date and time. Microsoft, meanwhile, has booked a venue in downtown LA with a view to a 6PM opening time, GamesIndustry.biz reports.
That either company intends to announce its next-generation console at their respective events hasn't been confirmed, but with the E3 games industry show due to kick off the day after, 17 May, it's a pretty good bet that both companies have big gaming announcements to make.
Sony spokesfolks have hinted in the past that PS3 - or whatever it will be called - will be launched ahead of E3. Past product roadmaps have pointed to an early to mid-2005 launch. The company gave the PowerPC-derived 'Cell' processor on which the new console will be based its first public outing in February. So the omens are good.
As they are on the Xbox 2 front. A memo alleged to have leaked out of games publisher Electronic Arts earlier this year pointed to a late 2005 release date for Microsoft's next console, codenamed 'Xenon'. Next month's launch notwithstanding, PS3 isn't expected to ship until Q1/Q2 2006, so Microsoft could very well want to get in ahead of its rival will a release targeting the Christmas 2005 sales season. Comment made by other industry players, including Nintendo, suggests the business believes Microsoft will try to get in early.
Having not taken the chance to launch Xbox 2 at January's Consumer Electronics Show or February's Game Developer's Conference, Microsoft has to be eyeing upcoming major games industry events of which E3 is by far the biggest and most important.
Microsoft said last week its new hardware will "deliver on the company's vision of the HD Era" by offering "high-definition graphics, extraordinary benefits of constant connectedness and exceptional personalization abilities" as it announced the initial line-up of publishers preparing Xbox 2 titles.

Two large makers just exist so that people can be argue endlessely about which one is better. Like AMD vs Intel, Windows vs Linux, PS3 vs Xbox2, Civ3 vs Civ2, Asher vs [Agathon|Urban Ranger], Oerdin vs Iraq, Atahualpa vs myself and the whole world vs Mars.
Three would confuse people too much, so it's just two.
What is better: for one company and product to have a monopoly, or for people to have a choice? Personally it would be nice if everything was available for one system.
Btw, I heard that the Xbox 360 will be off-white. Source: a tech journalist here talked to one of his sources at Microsoft.

Sometimes choice is bad and sometimes good. Sometimes all the choice gets reduced to the price, you do a ranking and buy the cheapest or one in the middle range if you are suspicious that the cheaper ones are good, but then you already have to inform yourself on the internet which is better and which not and why and why not andOriginally posted by Brent

Anyway people need choice. I know of a producer of curtain-thingies (those atop the window where you stick the curtain to). 90% of the people buy them in white color and 90% I believe between 2-3 models, all the other colors and models just exist to persuade people that they have got a choice...
In the case of a computer gaming console, for one I think it's good that there are many, because then there is competition which cuts the price. But then, there are games for this and for that and if you are serious about it you'll have to buy both and in the end I bet you'll be paying as much as you'd have paid if there was a monopoly. And if you are not serious about it, well then you can only play half of the games and you have to decide which half you want.

I don't believe it. Maybe Nintendo, or maybe a new attempt by Apple at the console market, but for the Xbox successor to change from black to (off) white? No!Originally posted by nostromo

I think three consoles would be able to succeed together, but only if all of them make good business decisions. When you look the games offered, the majority of them are available on all console platforms, and PC. The only thing that differentiates them is graphics, and the occasional new level. There are only a few (important) franchises that are exclusive: Mario/Zelda/Metroid for Nintendo, Halo 2 for Xbox. GTA used to be squarely in the Playstation realm, but has been released for the Xbox, which leaves them...something to claim as their own. I think we'll see more focus on this, trying to create a fanbase around exclusive games, which will keep gamers loyal to a console - Sony should have done everything humanly possible to keep GTA a PS2/3 only game, for instance, and gain as much a hold on the sports genre as possible.
We'll see. But you have to admit that black gets dirty faster. Btw, what's the point of going HD. I know, it looks better: my 640x480 Xbox graphics are starting to look crude compared to my 1280x1024 PC graphics. But most people simply can't afford HD TV's.

And I don't see how black gets dirty faster than white, other than dust, which is easily brushed off.

Because HD is becoming more popular very rapdily, and the console is expected to last 5 years.Originally posted by nostromo

Plus it's common to hook it up to LCD displays now (especially in the college crowd).

Of course, me to. But unfortunately I'll never enjoy it, unless I plug my Xbox in my computer monitor. But that defeats the whole purpose of consoles.I'd rather have the feature available, than not.

Microsoft sets date for Xbox 2 debut

Microsoft will give the public its first glimpse of the next Xbox during a global MTV broadcast next month.
MTV outlets in North America, Europe and Asia will air a 30-minute program titled "MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed" on May 12 and May 13, the software giant announced Monday.
At the E3 show, Sony plans to get a 3-hour head start in the next lap of the game console race.
The successor to the current Xbox has been the subject of much anticipation and rumor over the past few years. Microsoft has filled in many technical details, such as the processor and development tools the next Xbox will utilize, but key information such as the name, price and on-sale date for the console have remained secret. Other hotly debated topics about the next Xbox include whether it will run games for the current Xbox and if it will include a hard drive.
Microsoft executives have also talked about the next Xbox in general terms. Chairman Bill Gates told CNET News.com that besides eye-popping games, the next Xbox would include an array of multimedia tools.
"We didn't do Xbox just to do a video game; we did it to be part of our vision of the digital lifestyle, and with the next generation, we really get to go there," he said. In the first generation, we had one simple goal, which was to establish credibility as a great video game platform. We've done that.
"As we go into this next generation, it's much broader," he added. "So just for the games alone you'd go, 'wow,' but the concept now of bringing in your music, your media, connecting to the PC, connecting Xbox Live to Messenger--that just makes it a very big deal."
Microsoft had been expected to save the unveiling of the next Xbox for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade show next month. But the TV event gives the company a head start of a few days and should ensure that Microsoft's news won't be lost among announcements regarding competing consoles, including the expected unveiling of Sony's PlayStation 3.
"We are ecstatic about our alliance with MTV and unveiling a video game platform in a way that has never been done," Peter Moore, vice president of worldwide marketing for the Xbox division at Microsoft, said in a statement.
The program will air at 6:30 p.m. PDT Thursday, May 12 in the United States and at various times Friday, May 13 in other parts of the world. The show will be hosted by actor Elijah Wood, best known as Frodo in the "Lord of the Rings" films.

These are not big deals - all but one is already a feature available on the Xbox sitting in my room. Microsoft needs to stop acting like people want to spend 300-400 bucks on a console so they can connect it to a PC or all these little gimmicks they are trying to market; just show us pictures and specs!

I have a massive collection of TV shows/movies/music on my PC. Why the hell would you want to use physical media anymore, when the Xbox2 is wireless out of the box?Originally posted by Gamecube64

Stream your media from your PC onto your HDTV. That's desirable to many people, including myself.

can be done without an X-Box.

Yes, but it's less equipment and an added bonus if it's integrated with it. Cheaper, too.
Just like how DVDs can be watched without a PS2 or Xbox, yet people use them for it.
Nintendo got burned listening to people like you, and they'll probably get burned again. They're out of touch with the reality of what most consumers want.

I don't need music or dvd players in my game system. They are crap compared to real ones, and drives the price up. I might pay more overall but in the end I have much better quality. I do want online play however, and the big N will give it to us with the Revolution. It will use a system like X-Box live, except hopefully free. It will use Wi-Fi instead of wires, which will allow you to hook up via a hotspot in your city or a wireless router. Same with the DS. The first title to use this, Animal Crossing DS, is slated to come out later this year so it is not just a dream.

The Revolution is going to be backwards-compatible with GCN games and (I believe) use Blu-ray discs and play DVDs, as well as having a hard drive, so it sounds to me like they're getting more things right this next generation than the XBOX 360 SUCH A BIG NUMBER LOL.Originally posted by Asher

Oh, and from what I've heard the new Xbox is in fact going to be white; prototype images of the controllers have leaked out and I'll see if I can track them down.

I bet the new Xbox looks suspiciously like the mac mini.

That's not a controller. I don't know what it is, but it's most certainly not a controller.
PS2 controller all the way.
That's one stupid looking controller.
