OFFICIAL 2004 CENSUS - Apolyton PBEM Forum

You too must have asked yourself this question:

How many PBEM games is Paddy in???

Well, this is when we find out. This is the, official ...

    2004 PBEM Forum Census

    Please post the following information:

Number of 2-4 player games you are involved in:

Number of 5-8 player games you are involved in:

Number of PBEM games played to completion:

List your top 3 favourite PBEM games:

    Notes:

    1. The number of players is based on the original game set-up, excluding AI opponents. (ie a 2 player, 6 AI game is in the 2-4 list).

    2. The first category also includes the AU601 and 4 player tourney matches.

    3. Include modded and conquest games. Do not include democracy games.

    4. Include games you started and are still in, and games where you have permanently taken over for another player. (temporary subsitutions - eg for holidays - do not count)

    5. Include all active or semi-active games. Include those where the game is temporarily halted because of vacations, as well as those that have been excruciatingly slow (eg. ISDG#1 and the Medieval Mod.) Exclude those that are clearly dead in the water (eg ISDG#2 and the first Youth in Asia) or those that have been completed. You get to report those separately, with our hearty congratulations.

    6. Completed games only include those played here at Apolyton, and where a legitimate victory was won (ie the victory was not the result of everyone else quitting.)

    7. Your list of favourite games may include completed games.

I will compile the stats and report back.

Please make an effort to be counted, and count your games.

    Paddy - you're up.

Like the Baseball Hall of fame where you can do write-in votes for Pete Rose. Guess this should have been a standard census question.

    2004 PBEM Forum Census

Number of 2-4 player games you are involved in:

    Phoenix (Completed)
    Double or Nothing (Completed)
    Pandora (Completed)
    Glory of War (Completed)
Islands in the Stream #1 (Still Playing)
Islands in the Stream #2 (Still Playing)

Number of 5-8 player games you are involved in:

    Misfits of Society (Still Playing)

Number of PBEM games played to completion:

    Phoenix (Completed - Win )
Double or Nothing (Completed – 2 Winners)
    Pandora (Completed - Loss)
Glory of War (Completed – Easy Win)

List your top 3 favourite PBEM games:

My favourites are those that have completed.
Misfits & Islands #1 & #2 although fun … still have a long way to go.

    #4 Phoenix
Popped an early settler and never looked back.
Eliminated all of my opponents. One in each age.

    #3. Pandora (3 players)
I started on an island continent
    Soltz got stuck in jungle
Conqueror also got a poor start. (Only the 3 AI had nice starts)
My bold move of establishing a foothold on the main continent failed.
(I even used a Great Leader to rush a Forbidden Palace)
Conqueror kicked me off (destroying my FP) & then eventually also eliminated Soltz.
But my death was cause by my detour to Democracy while Conqueror sped to Marines.
    He invaded & I died.
    Loss

#2. Glory of War (3 players - Panzer & GengisFarb)
While waiting for the PTWDG Roleplay offensive, we set up this internal PBEM.
I easily killed them both off. (But then, who hasn’t killed GengisFarb in a PBEM ??)
My Golden Age & Mounted Warriors just rolled over them both with sheer numbers.
    Neither stood a chance.
Best moment was Panzers last spearman in his capital killing my last three MW’s.
Panzer got a reprieve for 2 extra turns before I could rest and send in reinforcements.
Also, after I killed GF, he had a settler in a galley and sailed around the continent for about 20 turns.
I had about 10 galleys looking for him.
It took another 2 weeks &2 galleys to finally kill his last settler and win the game by Conquest.

    #1 & clearly my favourite
    The Double or Nothing EPIC.
4 players on a large map.
Nothing went right for me in this game.
I chose Arabia, but then found out that huts were turned off. (So much for explorers)
Large Map so everyone had plenty of room .. except for me who got squeezed next to Jungle & the Chinese Flandrien.
I got horses and had an ancient age war with China and eventually destroyed him.
Tiberius & Imtoops tech embargoed me for most of the Middle Age.
But I then snuck in a Great Library build, and got most of the techs (Including Democracy) for free.
Tiberius was clearly in the best position of the game, so I invaded when I got Marines & gutted his empire.
Tibs & Imtoops war alliance against me failed because of my Golden Age & a nice choke point. I could easily out-produce both of them. Once I got tanks we declared peace.
As we entered the modern age, Vondrack substituted in for Tiberius.
My golden age had pushed me ahead in tech in the Modern Age.
I was a few techs from a Space Ship win when I discovered ...I had no URANIUM !!!
(I held one third of the continent & didn’t have any uranium FFS)
I did a sneaky evil invasion into Imtroops, destroying 95% of his empire and hooked up his source of uranium for the one turn I needed it.
Vondrack invaded me while I rushed towards my last tech.
Hats off to Vondrack .. he had rebuilt the Egyptian empire to a military powerhouse.
I couldn’t retreat fast enough before his Mechanised Infantry & Modern Armor.
I misjudged how fast he could push into my territory, and realised he would take my only source of aluminium on the very turn I needed it for the last Space Ship Part.
I rushed some marines & hooked up a Naval Transport Chain.
On his turn, he took my aluminium
On my turn, I finished the last Space Ship Tech.
I invaded his empire with the use of a transport chain & marines.
Took one of his cities with a harbor.
Then marched into his territory with only a few cav & modern armor.
I took about 4 undefended core cities, hooked up his aluminium, and switch my prebuild to the last spaceship part.

This game was a complete EPIC.
On many turns, I spent hours just looking and studying the save. Moving masses of miltary trying to defend against vondracks huge army. Micromanaging every city.
I know Vondrack did the same… spending multiple hours playing each individual turn.

Unfortuately, there was controversy. Vondrack did not believe Ship Chaining was a valid tactic.
I clearly felt that it was.
It left a bitter end to what was the best civ experience I have ever had.
So … we called it a win for both of us.
I was clearly out-matched by Vondrack, and had no hope of holding out for much longer.
If it weren’t for chaining, he would have clearly won.
But then, if he knew ship chaining was allowed, he would have defended better.

Both of us won this game.

Oh is it? I got the distinct impression from HE's post that we're in the stories forum

And sorry if my response was a little short, but I assumed that when Beta asked for numbers, we should respond with....ummmm.....numbers.

Beta, I think you need to exclude Paddy's figures from the Census. Statistically, they will completely screw up the averages
So if you meet me have some courtesy, have some sympathy and some taste

Wasn't Hell's Basement the one we dropped in order to start up Monty-Zuma instead? I think the one you were conscripted for was AP/E QQ, which wasn't on your list. One wonders how many other games Paddy has lost track of...

    2004 PBEM Forum Census

    2-4player games

    - "AU601": 2 player/6 AI stock rules game, playing as Greece (vs. MotownDennis as the Greeks)

    - "The Grapes of Rhoth": 4 player/4 AI Rise of Rome scenario, playing as Rome (hasn't started yet)

-'Iron Civer AA Coliseaum'; sort of moving along another Arnelositis casualty.

    5-8 player games

    - "Mesopotamia": 7 player Mesopotamia scenario, playing as the Babs (took over for fephi)

    - "The Grand Passage": 5 player/3 AI Age of Discovery scenario, playing as Spain (took over for Sir Osis a few turns ago) (moves at almost a turn a day )

    - "IDG Green Team": 5 player stock rules game, playing as the Iroquois (Playing in spurts, this one has been affected by Arnelositis )

-'Balderdash, the Revenge of the Pathetic Clowns.' The game is a restart of a failed game. But the game doesn't matter just an excuse to have a trash talking thread.

-'Double Blind PBEM', some kind of a weird PBEM where Im playing the Dutch. We had this incredibly goofy way to pick our Civ's, I still dont understand, and now we are trying to come up with all kinds of rules including severly limiting diplomacy. Beta talked me into it. That figures

-'The Middle Ages PBEM' where I took over the Danes for Sir Osis, seems to be moving slow right now.

-'Conquests Only" PBEM here I took over for Tweedledum as the Byzantines.

    How many have finished

    - Not a single one. But three of my current ones (my favorites, see below) all have a good chance of finishing.

    Favorites

    - The Grand Passage
    - Mesopotamia
    - AU601

The Grapes of Rhoth may replace one of these as a favorite. Probably AU601, not because I dont like it but because I made a few dumb mistakes and its beginning to bite me in the but.[/QUOTE]

The limited diplomacy was in from the beginning. It's not our fault if you don't read the first post with the game specifics.

Hey con, you're supposed to put your own information into the "How many have you finished" and "favorites" columns, not recycle mine.

woah! some of you guys are really extreme! (43 for paddy, 25 for beta, 20 for aqua)!

i peaked at 15 games and was starting to think about finding replacement in some. then came the summer lethargy with several games stalling which even made it possible to start 4 new intense games (4 times 1vs1 games against andydog... including au601. 2 finished, 1 soon)

at least i'm currently "2nd-best" at completed games
