  • Considering getting a bow hunting license

Deer are so endemic around here that I'm actually allowed to shoot them from my own porch. 'murica

Get a crossbow. Cheap, easy to shoot. Or don't. I'm not really an expert.

It's legal in Virginia too. **** deer.

Either that or release copious numbers of wolves, bears, jaguars, and siberian tigers in the area. That would also be fun.

Guns ****ing rock and I pity those of you in the UK where you have to show ID to buy tableware.

I have a hunting rifle in .243 and a 20 gauge shotgun, both of which are suitable for hunting, but I've never found to time to actually do it.

The reason bowhunting is allowed in backyards but not rifle or shotgun hunting is because the arrows/bolts don't fly very far so you're not likely to hit anyone in suburbia.

I hope you are proficient at archery (or practie a lot before you actually try hunting with a bow) ...
as a former archer I know well how bad the hit chances of archery beginners are ...
if I would stand at the position of the 50m targets and let a beginner shoot at me with his bow,
I am rather confident that I would´t get hit by him ...
even at 30ms you would have a good chance of not getting hit by beginners shooting at you

(and the region you would have to hit in order to cause the deer to die fast (and not unnecessarily suffer) (which would be lungs and heart IIRC) would be much smaller than a human body [I guess the equivalent of scoring 7 or higher on an 80cm target])

A friend of mine hunts with a crossbow and says it's not really that hard to hit with a crossbow, the trouble is just that it doesn't tend to kill them right away and so it involves a chase.

Not surprising ... shooting a crossbow surely can be more compared to shooting a rifle.
You don´t have to worry about correct anchoring, releaseing ... getting your bowstring correctly aligned with the bow and so on, which would be the case when shooting a bow

Crossbows have similar energy to a .22lr round. You need good shot placement. A lot of people in the US hunt deer with huge overkill cartridges where you can hit the deer wherever and still kill it.

The goal in hunting is to have the deer die right there, and not be able to run before expiring. If you get a bad shot, the deer might dash 100 yards before it finally dies.

In that case, 40mm grenade launcher would be the way to go.
