  • Marijuana use doesn't lower IQ. Alcohol does.

A 2012 Duke University study made international headlines when it purported to find a link between heavy marijuana use and IQ decline among teenagers. Other researchers questioned the findings almost immediately: Columbia University's Carl Hart noted the very small sample of heavy users (38) in the study, leading him to question how generalizable the results were.

Then, a follow-up study published 6 months later in the same journal found that the Duke paper failed to account for a number of confounding factors: "Although it would be too strong to say that the results have been discredited, the methodology is flawed and the causal inference drawn from the results premature," it concluded.

Now, a new study out from the University College of London provides even stronger evidence that the Duke findings were flawed. The study draws on a considerably larger sample of adolescents than the Duke research - 2,612 children born in the Bristol area of the U.K. in 1991 and 1992. Researchers examined children's IQ scores at age 8 and again at age 15, and found "no relationship between cannabis use and lower IQ at age 15," when confounding factors - alcohol use, cigarette use, maternal education, and others - were taken into account. Even heavy marijuana use wasn't associated with IQ.

"In particular alcohol use was found to be strongly associated with IQ decline," the authors write. "No other factors were found to be predictive of IQ change."

            THC coats synapses, thereby

            a) forcing the synapses to work harder to form coherent thought, a bit like training in heavy joggers, and
            b) preserving the synapses from decay, thus delaying the onset of age-related brain dulling.

It can therefore be concluded that marijuana in fact increases IQ.

My synapses are often training in heavy joggers under the influence of alcohol too.

The other day, for the first time in the history of Sava, I smoked a lil bit and then went on a run.

It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

                  Is this true?
Is it a question of getting high or getting alzheimers?

Whatever makes one happy, no problem
since I've stopped drinking alcohol I've noticed many things.
For example there was a dull ache, almost always but it got accentuated after drinking, on my upper left side exactly where the, em, stern bones (sp?) end?
                      Now it's totally gone.
                      It's a very good feeling.
Hangovers have obviously completely stopped. So there are no "wasted" days the day after.
And that dizziness in the mind that seemed to linger for at least 2 days is gone too.
                      I've also noticed something else.
That I instinctily don't drink anymore.
For example I can be at home and (very rarely now) a thought would come to my head like "go get a beer" and it's completely ignored in a milisecond.
(I do drink loads of coke and orange juice though).
That is, I do get outside and I do get a drink but it's a soda or orange juice.
When I feel anxious I say to my self, this is unrelated to you drinking.
You're feeling anxious, ok. No connection to alcohol any more though.
And a last thing I've noticed is that I don't give "way" to people so much anymore.
In the past I'd often let's say "betray" myself a bit just to be pleasing.
From the point the drinks stopped, that stopped too. I have a feeling those were connected.

It is obnoxious and I don't mind a puff every now and then. It screams teen wannabe rebel the way the whole wine culture screams wannabe sophisticate.
