You know, this logic failed in the thread about Flew, and it fails for the same reason here.

Americans are not different today than they have been in the past. Don't tell me they are innocent. You know what they do. Yet you live your life like they don't do those things, and even defend them.

Yes. What is the problem with seeing your own part in things? I did not vote for Bush, but I wake up every morning and contribute to my society. Each semester I take my student loan check, and I use it to pay my bills. That money circulates in the US economy and helps the US to maintain power. I'm a communist, but I don't claim any innocence. But for some reason the Libertarians want us to believe that they are innocent. Do you buy it?

I just don't understand that you complain about the others then.... And yes, I would say innocent. We are in part responsible for certain things - ok - but for me this is not the same as being guilty. For me guilt and responsibility are two different things.

And the AQ argument using this as explanation for own terror attacks (as it was used in an AQ paper that those in the WTC etc. were at least tax payers, therefore guilty) is IMO total bull.

Some people are not seeing things as reasonably as you.

Just because I am a lefty does not mean I agree with what the guys with a guilt trip are saying. I think this proffessor is an idiot, and I don't think the people in the WTC have any blame for 9-11. I consider myself a moderate socialist with emphasis on worker-run corporations in non-vital industries. As I said in a few other threads, I think (unlike the Marxists) that greed is a part of human nature, but just because greed is a part of human nature does not mean greed is good.

And what reason is that, pray tell? It seems a good article to me.

Haven't you heard? It is fashionable here in the institutes of 'higher' learning to hate your native land and spit out the name of America rather than have any affection for it. It is considered intellectually superior if you carry around guilt for every infraction ever committed by anyone anywhere on this cursed soil. An Indian (Native American) run off his land while other's porotested their injustice and petitioned congress on their behalf? -- No matter -- we are all guilty! A slave owner beating his slave while others risked their lives to rescue and give shelter to escaped slaves? No matter -- we are all guilty! Women forbidden to vote while many marched in the streets so they could have to right? No matter -- we are all guilty! Helping Europe to rid itself of an evil madman while others made a profit from the war? -- No matter -- we are all guilty because we somehow helped them make a profit for daring to buy a loaf of bread to feed out families and not starving ourselves to death in the name of justice and fairness for all.

Blacks oppressed and treated like dogs while other millions marched in the streets and risked their lives and exposed the hypocrise of 'free America'? No matter, the marchers and the opressors are all guilty! Kill them all and every remnant of this nation whether woman, man or child who ever dared to set foot on this soil and didn't spit on the ground and curse the day he was born. Guilty, guilty. guilty!

                  • How many Americans marched in the street to protest the sanctions? All of them? Are all Americans innocent? Bull****!

I wasn't talking about his arguments in the article. I was talking about the (implicit) argument that since a "well known" Libertarian says it, all the other Libertarians ought to give it extra weight.

I sensed a bit of sarcasm.

Well, they should read the article. In any case it is obvious that Libertarians believe in some sort of social contract, otherwise they have no way of empowering their judiciary.

Of course, they might not want a judiciary. In that case, let the raping and looting commence.

I've become somewhat of a cynic in my oid age. Sorry about that.
