So I am once more thinking of a new phone. Now I should have money to buy one (I didn't last year). I have had a Champ (suitable only for texting/phoning) since my iPhone went missing a year ago.

I don't need something 'big' or 'best'. I was pretty happy with the iPhone 3, although it was starting to have battery life issues and was a bit slow with some 'usual' things.

I am not a big app user. I used iSSH, kindle, mail, internet and a couple of games (primarily plants and zombies).

I am looking for something similar. It would be used while I was travelling (generally to/from work, but also at conferences so would need to be unlocked).

I prefer a phone because of the dual use, but for some of my needs an iPad/etc would be more useful.

    I am currently considering:
    iPhone 4s
    iPad Mini (Retina)
    Blackberry Z10
    Nexus 4

The latter two have a real advantage in price, and I never bought into Apple's app ecosystem although I use apple computers and Keynote/Pages and so there might be a real advantage there. I guess in the perfect world I wouldn't carry my computer around at conferences but only a mobile computing device. It might be more important to me than the phone (to not need to carry my computer at conferences).

I would also prefer not to spend a 'lot' but also would prefer 'quality' over 'cheapness'.

Always expect battery issues with Apple products. Its an area they pay very little attention to, unless they are making their crap deliberately so you have to replace it.

I have an iPhone 5 (for work) and we also have a S4 ... I much prefer Android to iOS. The iPhone is always asking me to confirm things I just confirmed just before, and the back button on Android is something I always miss when using it.

I like the android back button except for the retarded app-specific context stuff.

                  Indeed.

My brother in law has one. Supposedly, it's water-proof/resistant too.

I have owned a Nexus 4 with 16Gbs of memory since Spring of 2013 and I love it. I bought an AT&T network sim card through straight talk and I pay like 139 for 3 months of service (unlimited text, talk, and 2.5 GBs of data a month) including all taxes. I haven't had any issues with space on it, and the GPS works really well. I use it for internet (chrome), directions (google maps and occasionally poynt), running (mapmyrun), youtube, outlook and gmail, audible, dropbox, and occasionally for games. One standout app for me is the xbox one smartglass app. I can use my phone to not only control my xbox but now it controls the comcast box as well. It's awesome. I just got the Android 4.4.4 update like 2 days ago and it seems like Android gets better with each update.

The screen looks really nice and the cameras are decent. Bluetooth works pretty good. I think I've used the NFC twice on it.

Though one downside is that the battery isn't user replaceable and I'm noticing that the battery is losing its juice.

I've used the moto g quite a bit and it is almost as good as the Nexus 4, plus you can get it for as cheap as 176 for the 8 GB version.

I had pretty much decided on the Z10 (fast, cheap (250), good basic software, blackberry (I would like to support them), replaceable battery). Then I realized that I couldn't just walk into the store and buy it unlocked (BestBuy has it for 250, but not in store?).

I think I can do that with the iPhone from the Apple store.

That coupled with my desire for some handheld device that can be my 'only' conference device and the fact that I can use Keynote/etc on the iPhone is making me think iPhone.

Not buying today, but if I am buying this trip it will be tomorrow.

Yes you can buy an unlocked iphone, but compared to a Nexus 5, they are all just too expensive

                          unlocked

                          Google Play store
                          Nexus 5 16 GB - 349
                          Nexus 5 32 GB - 399
Moto G 16 GB Google Play edition - 199 (cheaper option)

                          Apple store
                          iphone 4S 8 GB - 450
                          iphone 5c 16 GB - 549
                          iphone 5c 32 GB - 649
                          iphone 5s 16 GB - 649
                          iphone 5s 32 GB - 749
                          iphone 5s 64 GB - 849

The Z10 is 250, so even the android is too expensive (OK, Nexus 5 has some better stats).

However, I mentioned that being able to just take my phone with me to conferences might be a big bonus. In that case, Keynote is a big bonus.

I went to the Windows store today to look at the Windows phone. They have office, but are not sold unlocked.

Also as mentioned, if I had done the purchase earlier in the week I would have gotten the Z10 (or possibly Nexus 4). Now I think my options are:
                            1. iPhone 5c (or iPhone 5s, the iPhone 4s is slow for Keynote)
                            2. Samsung Galaxy Young

                            I fly Monday morning.

How much are you going to pay for the iPhone 5c/5s and the Samsung Galaxy Young?
