  • Cheap web site hosting that exposes .htaccess?

I'm looking to put together a low volume web site and need something that allows access to the .htaccess file in order to put a site-wide password on. Also, it would have to allow DNS direction: e.g., www.mysite.com goes to my site without any redirection.

Any suggestions? I have considered and discarded Google Sites and Squarespace because they do not expose this feature.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Following up on this, I chose godaddy's Linux hosting. About $4.50 a month and it appears to do what I need.

Should have put this in the real forum so it got noticed. Godaddy has an awful reputation for their hosting. In case anyone else is wondering or you end up wanting to change... HawkHost has been the best shared hosting I've tried in most respects. Basic package with the 50% coupon whts50v2 and 1 year payment means $20 for the first year.

        Thanks for the referral, Aeson.

I will definitely switch if godaddy doesn't play nice. $20 is peanuts...
