      • The part where Hockeybear pushes down his shades in an F-16 while "Danger Zone" starts up in the background may be the great moment in internet history.

The part where Hockeybear drops a fuel tank into a volcano and inexplicably explodes the world is a close second.

          • Nebraska, Okie State, and Texas A&M are all better than Texas and OU...

Which college team's NFL pipeline is thickest?

Our examination of which school's NFL pipeline is best begins (and for the Big 12, ends) today. In this case, we're looking for quality of production, not quantity of players.

Sorry Oklahoma and Texas, you didn't make the bracket, which seeded the top 16 teams according to a survey of NFL drafts over the past 30 years. Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Nebraska all finished higher, but only Oklahoma State and Nebraska made our bracket.

Texas and Oklahoma finished at Nos. 28 and 29 on our list, but here's what I had to say about the Cowboys and Huskers, who both lost as underdogs in their first-round matchup, eliminating the Big 12 entirely from the bracket.

            (14) Nebraska vs. (3) Pitt--Dan Marino is too strong for the Huskers, and the Panthers move on.

Nebraska gets overlooked when its two most successful NFL players are an offensive lineman -- 12-time Pro Bowler Will Shields -- and defensive end Neil Smith.

Perhaps the next most successful was another forgotten player, Roger Craig, who was the running back while Joe Montana and Jerry Rice set records and amassed touchdowns. But he still won the Offensive Player of the Year award in 1988.

Success is success, all sexiness aside. Some other players among Nebraska's best are only just past their primes.

Forget his fumbling problems: Ahman Green was a solid running back for Brett Favre. In his prime from 2000 to '04, he ran for more yards (6,848) than any other player in the NFL.

Nebraska is still bringing the beef up front with veteran defensive lineman Kyle Vanden Bosch, who's made the Pro Bowl in three of the past six seasons. Safety Mike Brown left the Chicago Bears in 2008 after helping the Bears put together one of the NFL's best defenses in 2005, his only Pro Bowl season.

            (15) Oklahoma State vs. (2) Miami (a.k.a. Da U) -- The Hurricanes 19 first-round picks from 2001-04 knock out the Cowboys. (4ever?)

Oh, what could have been. If only.

Thurman Thomas, although he was 0-4 in Super Bowls, was still one of the most productive backs in NFL history. He led the AFC in rushing in 1990, '91 and '93; he won the NFL MVP award in 1991; and was named Offensive Player of the Year in 1992. He's also one of only five running backs to rush for 1,000 yards in eight consecutive seasons, along with another famous Cowboy, Barry Sanders.

Sanders cut his fantastic career short but is arguably the greatest running back in NFL history. If he had gone somewhere beside Detroit and won games, he might have stuck around longer and challenged the career rushing lead.

Sanders' retirement is always point No. 2 in his legacy, but his shiftiness is No. 1. In 1997, he rushed for 2,053 yards, aided by an NFL record 14 consecutive 100-yard games. At that point, he was only the third player to do so. The 10-time Pro Bowler should help push the Cowboys into the Round 2, as Oklahoma State has produced two of the greatest running backs ever to play the game.

Our examination of which school's NFL pipeline is best begins (and for the Big 12, ends) today. In this case, we're looking for quality of production, not quantity of players.

            • Uggghhh...

In other news, here's some food for thought. Even with a crappy squad, Notre Dame pulls down respectable viewership opposite the SEC game of the week.

DALLAS, March 2, 2010 - The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) showcased today several impressive facts from the 2009 college football season, including top-notch television ratings and stellar bowl attendance figures, that emphasize a continuing trend of increased interest in the sport by millions of fans across the country.

Regular Season Ratings and Attendance Highlights

              * CBS Sports averaged its highest ratings since the sport returned to the network in 1996 with the SEC on CBS. The 4.4 rating represented a 29 percent increase over last year, and the network also landed the highest rated SEC Championship ever with the battle between No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama earning an 11.1 rating or an 18 percent increase above the previous year's game between the same two teams.

              * ESPN averaged 2.1 million households, 2.87 million viewers and a 2.2 rating per game this season, making it the most-viewed season for the outlet since 1994 and the highest-rated since 1999. The numbers represented increases of 11%, 12% and 10%, respectively, over last year. The USC at Ohio State game became the outlet's most-viewed game ever, including both bowl and regular season games, attracting 10.6 million viewers and a 7.3 rating while the Oregon State at Oregon game became the most-viewed Thursday night game ever for the outlet with 6.7 million viewers and a 4.3 rating.

              * ESPN2 experienced its most-viewed season ever, averaging 1.1 million households and 1.5 million viewers, representing increases of 8% and 11% respectively. The average ESPN2 rating remained at 1.1 for both seasons. The Pittsburgh at West Virginia game became the outlet's most-viewed game ever with 4.1 million viewers and a 2.9 rating.

              * ESPN's College GameDay Built by the Home Depot, the 2006 winner of the NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award, continued its meteoric rise in popularity with its most-viewed season ever, averaging 1.7 million households and 2 million viewers with a 1.7 rating for increases of 14 percent, 12 percent, and 13 percent, respectively, over last year.

              * ESPN's Heisman Trophy presentation marked its highest-rated and most-viewed show ever, posting a 4.1 rating, 4,045,000 households and 5,990,000 viewers, for 32% increases over last year while The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show averaged a 1.2 rating, 1,166,000 households and 1,593,000 viewers for a 33 percent ratings increase and a 48 percent increase in viewers, which made it the network's most-viewed college football awards show since 1996.

              * Both ESPN's College Football Final and College Football Live studio programs experienced viewership growth between 12-17 percent, attracting an average of 1.5 million and 478,000 viewers respectively.

              * NBC garnered a 16 percent increase in its average viewership for its Notre Dame coverage, pulling in 3.7 million viewers up from 3.2 million per game in 2008 [an average 3.7 rating].

              * The Big Ten Network's ratings increased across the board in 2009, with its average afternoon telecasts improving by 28 percent over 2008 and its eight primetime games exploding by a staggering 183 percent. • Better get ready for the Big Ten, Dan. I don't think even the monumental shortsightedness of Notre Dame's alumni is going to be enough to keep Swarbrick from doing the right thing for the school.

                  • That would probably be the best result for college football as a whole. All hell is going to break loose once the Big Ten poaches schools from the Big 12 and Big East, and a bunch of schools might end up being screwed through no fault of their own.

                    • OK, but if the Big Ten doesn't poach anybody from the Big East, then Notre Dame has little incentive to join the Big Ten.

If Notre Dame doesn't join the Big Ten, then the Big Ten is going to poach teams from the Big East.

then Notre Dame has little incentive to join the Big Ten.

This isn't true; Notre Dame would significantly improve both its athletic revenues and its academic standing by joining the Big Ten. There's no incentive for Notre Dame not to join the Big Ten, other than the need to placate deluded Irish alumni who value independence beyond all reason. If Swarbrick could magically wish away the Notre Dame alumni, he would've already told the Big Ten yes.

                        • Maryland?

The Big Ten began discussions Monday about conference expansion, and somewhere in a pile of folders is a file on the University of Maryland. According to two sources -- both former Big Ten coaches -- and a number of media outlets, the Terps are being considered for an invitation.

The Big Ten meetings initially will focus on how big the conference wants to get. Every time the Big Ten talks expansion, Notre Dame is at the top of the list. And every time the Irish have made it clear they have no intention of joining.

So does the conference expand to 14 or 16 teams? From all accounts, a 16-team Big Ten would likely include Missouri and Nebraska from the Big 12, Pittsburgh and Rutgers from the Big East and Maryland from the ACC. The media markets of those colleges would make the Big Ten the most attractive TV conference in the country.

The amount of money these five schools would be looking at could be in the $20-$22 million per year range, depending on how much money a Big Ten football conference championship game would bring in.

There is real concern about what Big Ten expansion would do to the state of college sports. Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski spoke about the topic with my sports business colleague Evan Weiner last week.

"The dust has not settled yet from expansion of a number of years ago [in 2003]," Krzyzewski said. "Because it wasn't as clean. There are teams left out. The Big East, you have 16 teams, eight of them are football schools, eight of them are not. It lends itself to other options and the Big Ten is the catalyst now. If they do something, a lot of dominos will fall."

The Big East has hired Georgetown grad and former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue as a special adviser to expansion. Meanwhile, the Pac-10 has hired the Hollywood firm Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to consult on possible expansion and media rights deals.

On Monday, ESPN won the TV rights to ACC football and basketball in a bidding competition with FOX Sports that will net the conference $1.86 billion over 12 years. That means each school will get about $13 million a year from the new contract.

The ACC deal, which works out to $155 million a year, dwarfs the average of $67 million the league was getting from its previous media deals, which expire at the end of the 2010-11 season. Still, it falls well short of the $205 million a year that the SEC gets from its new 15-year deals with CBS and ESPN.
