  • chernobyl was silly

Not the accident that was tragic but the series was silly.
    It is for dumb americans.

Do they really think that western bureaucracy would work better? Also what a hilarious propaganda piece. "Graphite is cheaper" Do you really think USSR would cut prices on that? What a bunch of moronic nonsense.

I rate it up there with the avengers (or other superhero crap I never seen) on matters of realism but quite high on matters of direction.
    That was adequate.

Imagine being a russian though. And having the most genocidal nation on earth racially hating your guts. Wow. It's a tough job being a russian. No wonder they garnish so much sympathy, fascists aside.

Graphite was cheaper. RBMK used mostly unenriched uranium as fuel, because enriching uranium is expensive. To make up for that, they moderated (enhanced) the reaction in the core with graphite, which slows neutrons and increases the probability of fission. The reactor was encased in graphite blocks, and the control rods had an upper half of boron (to slow the reaction) and a lower half of graphite, so that when the control rods were fully extracted, rather than water between the fuel rods (slowing the reaction), there was graphite (in the middle) to speed it up.

What the show elided was a bit of technical complexity: the low power of the plant meant water pressure in the coolant pumps was low, so steam voids near the bottom of the reactor weren't being pushed out, leading to a localized runaway reaction. Then they pushed all the control rods in, which displaced the water at the bottom with graphite, leading to even more accelerated nuclear activity with nothing to stop it.

While western government bureaucracies are justly infamous, they are not commonly faulted for penny-pinching, or for going with the cheapest possible solution. More the opposite.

Apart from the "cheaper" propaganda, another silly thing was that allegendly the "pressure" to clsoe the test would have been big in a soviet socialist system and not in the slavery of the free markets, as it always is.

Enriched uranium. Depleted uranium is literally the opposite. That is, uranium ore deposits are less than 1% U-235, which is the uranium needed for fission. You enrich it by upping that percentage. Enrichment requires centrifuges or lasers or other expensive techniques.

I do hope this series made clear that Chernobyl was a perfect storm of incompetence. We really need to stop badmouthing nuclear power.

That's what I got out of it, but I can definitely see people coming away from it just scared of nuclear power. The series doesn't help itself there, as it sometimes dips a little into fiction when portraying the effects of acute radiation sickness. Apart from the evil bureaucracy/dictatorship of the USSR, there's also a strong message of... nuclear power is a primal force of nature, and if you treat it casually (such that incompetence isn't checked and safeguarded against), it will literally blow up in your face.

BE’s scientific illiteracy is breath taking.

I agree insofar that it was pretty silly to let the Chernobyl thing happen.

Where did I say anything wrong or was I contradicted even a single time on anything "Scientific" I said?
I know I'm in the pit of stupid americans but still...
Lorizael, since PChang you're too "american" (sort of) to grasp it simply goes on bambling about things I hasvne't said.

Your stupidity (and values) is what's breathtaking

I think we are on the emergence of a new kind of stupid. Pchang stupid, where reality and truth are seen as conspiracies or ineptitude (at best). Dumb american wasn't thought up for no reason.

                        To sum up:

Do you realize Pchang that I haven't been refuted on a single scientific point I made? Do you realzie that? Have you even read Lori's "repsonces" to me and see they are unrelated or did you just jump on conclusions? That's just sad man. Lori's second answer was also completely unrelated to the point. Can you think?
THe only one who replied to what I said was elok and what I said wasn't scientific.
Do you see how stupid you look?

                        Amazing

DU is in AT ammo that has been used in combat on the Balkan, but it is not used in (conventional) bombs. There's some secondary use in nukes, but Yugoslavia has not been nuked during the 1990ies..

The angloamerican genociders found a way to recycle their nuclear waste **** by building rockets out of it.
Who on earth talked about nukes?
I and everyone talks about depleted uranium bomb shells(metal) that have contaminated Serbian land

Careful you trend dangerously close to yankee land

The only thing the series did BTW was another good laugh at americans.
