Stalin wanted to be Hitler's bff, which is the only explanation for why he was completely unprepared for the German invasion, despite having been warned repeatedly by his underlings that he shouldn't trust them. And the truly sad part is that the Germans were using materials to kill the Russians that they wouldn't have otherwise had, since Stalin had been trading with them as part of the pact.
