While individuals may not be able to figure out the connection between sex and pregnancy all at once, I find it hard to believe that any society able to figure out agriculture would be incapable of figuring out that sex=pregnancy. After all, how different is making the connection between stick seed in ground and wait to get food from stick penis into vagina and wait to get pregnant woman, whcih equal baby?
Again I agree, but my main argument was for truly ancient societies.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila
An aside: In a culture where celibacy among women is very rare the conection between sex and pregnancy may be a bit harder to notice.

I'm pretty sure that early soothsayers etc. quickly set up reseach centers where they studied this - I'm also pretty sure that they for centuries claimed that further studies was nessecary and that more virgins was needed for their studies
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
In 10256 BC at precisely 11:00 AM EST the results of the 1st scientific study became "unsealed" and the truth of the link between sex and pregancy were revealed to the general public. Some years later, however, contradictory findings were published by the church and the heretical nature of the 'scientific method' was declared.
Again I agree, but my main argument was for truly ancient societies.
There are no "societies" prior to agriculture. You get tribal hunter-gatherer groups, but those can't really be termed societies.
If I had to guess, I would think this is knowledge that predates homo sapiens sapiens, much like stone tools.

I'm fairly confident humans have always known sex leads to reproduction ever since we became self-aware (and very likely for millennia or megayears before we became self-aware. Slugs do it).
It may have been some time before our understanding of medical issues became good enough to allow us to know why sometimes sex DOESN'T lead to pregnancy.
Humans are year-round fecund but there will be some limitations for the monthly cycle. Infertility for individuals may also be a confounding factor.
Actually, if you read the Earth's Children books by Jean M. Auel, there is an interesting look at Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon tribes which have about the same level of intelligence as we do today, but both of which believe in spirits causing pregnancy. In their schema, the sex is helpful but not conclusive.
Again, the hit-or-miss over conception is to blame for this.
Yeah, I remember really liking them when I was a young teen. Particularly certain bits.
Never read the 5th. Based on the way things were going, it was probably quite wild?

GENERATION 35: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
No, fifth was pretty dull. Jondalar and Ayla get back to the clan where he grew up. The author seemed to be more into writing a soap opera than any actual anthropology, which was the strong point in the other books.
Even the shagging scenes were pretty dull. Jondalar is basically a bumbling idiot who's left a string of really angry women everywhere he's gone. Ayla fixes all his messes. There's Zolena/Zelandonii who is like a hermaphroditic Cardinal Richelieu scheming to do Unpleasant Things to Ayla.
I don't remember much else. They get married. Have a kid. Badabing, badaboom, author hits all the necessary plot points. Book's over.
I imagine the societal changes once the link was made where considerable to say the least, isn't there anyone with a crackpot theory explaining off some very early prehistoric change in the archeological record with this? Or pointing to it as a source of several ancient myths?
