  • Kindergartener busted -- yes, busted -- for throwing a tantrum

Suprisingly, not in Texas. Unsurprisingly, in Florida:

Avon Park, Fla., is a zero-tolerance kind of place.

On March 28, Desre'e Watson, a 6-year-old kindergarten student at Avon Elementary School, had a bad morning. She cried. She wailed. She kicked. She scratched. She hit a teacher. That's what the police say, anyway.

The police? That's right. To subdue the unruly kindergartner, school officials phoned Avon Park's police department ("committed to enhancing the 'Quality of Life' of the community"). When the cops arrived, young Desre'e attempted to resist arrest by crawling under a table. But Avon Park's finest pulled her out, cuffed her, put her in a police cruiser, drove her to the county jail, and charged this 50-pound menace with a felony and two misdemeanors. The police report is below.

"When there is an outburst of violence," Police Chief Frank Mercurio told a local news station, "we have a duty to protect and make that school a safe environment for the students, staff and faculty. That's why, at this point, the person was arrested regardless what the age." Let's hope his message gets across to those brats in the neonatal wards.
Click this link for the original webpage, which contains a scan of the police report.

And I'll say it: you've gotta wonder if they would have done this to a white 6-year-old.

    But mostly: WTF?

what are you going to do when teachers can't touch the children

Children like that should be spanked by the teacher or principal.

edit: just to clarify- they shouldn't use their hand. That could cause all sorts of accusations. A paddle should be used hard enough to leave a mark.

They cuffed the kid,. took in and charged her with a felony? Is that supposed to be a joke? I thought the cops were there to kind of scare the kid but seems they made an arrest. Great. Now you gave the kid fame.

The judge that this case is presented to is going to be all like, "DOUBLE YOU TEA EFF?!" and throw it out, dismissing all charges.

I'm just wondering how the 911 operator or police operator took the call. They couldn't have believe it was serious.

Or the patrol car that got the car. I bet they were laughing their asses off.

A plastic bag around the head for some minute will do. Also, it's time to take revenge of the sleep deprivation those brats caused to their parents by keeping them awake.
Oh, and try them on somelawless military outpost that doesn't really belong to the US.
              That will teach them!

While I don't agree with corporal punishment, this is a good point. The teachers can't restrain the child physically for fear of recriminations, so have to call the police to do it. I agree charging with a felony is going way to far, but I can understand why the teachers called the police rather than restrain the child themselves.

Should have smashed the kid's head into the concrete repeatedly.

They usually called one of my parents and had them do it.

You wouldn't believe how tempted I've been to do that when parents who don't care to control their kids inflict them on me.

I'm still shocked - you USians call the children in the Kindergarten "kindergartner"? That's soooo wrong. A "Kindergärtner" would be the person working there to take care of the kids.....
