Btw, why don't you play rugby instead, which is at least a true man's sport? What do you need all this gear for?

The scarcity is the genius of it all. It builds tension and the whole game is totally unpredictable. You can play a superb game, lead by 2-0 for 70 minutes and still lose the game by some twisted turn of fate.

Indeed . It's like a pitcher's duel in baseball. It's just increadibly tense as one run can win the game (anyone that followed the MLB World Series this year knows what I'm talking about). Though I am an equal oppertunity across the pond sport fan. I enjoy watching American Football, Baseball, and Soccer. Hockey is right below that, and Basketball is so far down, it matches lawnmower racing.

Hockey would be more interesting to you if you weren't a fan of the most boring NHL teams in history.

I certainly wouldn't want to compare it with baseball. THAT's a dull game. A fascinating sociological experience in real life but otherwise not something I'd want to bother with. (wouldn't mind trying out rugby or ice hockey)

Good question. Although having common origins, football and Rugby Union developed somewhat independently of one another until formal rules were adopted by different anglophone universities. Look at it as experimentation based upon a common theme.

Of course, the forward pass forever separated football from Rugby Union football. The forward pass is at once the best innovation ever introduced into football and the worst. What we play now is pretty much Harvard rules football plus the forward pass.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                shows what you know...

blocking schemes in football are well organized and extensively planned...

there is a lot of strategy involved in NFL football... more so than any other sport... which is why it takes an entire week to prepare for a game!

rugby is a poor man's version of football...

I'd say rugby is a better sport than soccer, but it doesn't even compare to top sports like NHL hockey, Major League Baseball, and NFL football...

basketball sucks... I only care about the Chicago Bulls...

but even basketball is better than soccer...

and I am not even going to talk about golf... that is not a sport... (golf is a game, not a sport) golf should be banned... and the courses should be turned into nature preserves and parks

and the golf course in Augusta, GA should be turned into a museum dedicated to Universal Suffrage

How is Atlanta boring? They have a good offense and crappy defense. That results in a LOT of high scoring games .

I just wasn't that huge of a fan of the NHL game before the lockout (with the huge pads, no touch up icing, etc) and now, we only get NHL games on OLN... ugh. Going to the rink is great fun.

But even then, I'd rather watch the NFL, MLB, or some GOOD soccer (bad soccer is down the list).

Read the World Series thread. People were tense the entire 4 games (even though it was a sweep). Each run was celebrated like a goal would be.

And FWIW, I find great enjoyment in baseball and the tensity of a pitchers' duel is very similar to a good soccer match (ie, where there is no blowout in the works ).

Asher: given the choice, I'd rather see the New Jersey Devils (with Brodeur) or Atlanta Thrashers before the Calgary Flames

                        Devils: Brodeur 'nuff said

Thrashers: good offense with Kovalchuk and Hossa

Flames: Iginla is the only player worth watching, and he is off to a mediocre start 5 goals and 5 assists in 13 games

It's not the players that make it interesting, it's the teamwork and the style of play.

New Jersey (especially before the lockout) played the trap for all it's worth, and Atlanta is just...Atlanta, there's no balance on the team.

The Flames didn't have a lot of big-name stars, the reason they got to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final is because they play good hockey as a team (once they get going and gel).

my post was in response to you saying the guys were falling on top of each other "randomly"

and the anticipation leading up to game day makes games much more exciting

Not since Lemaire left the team. Under Robinson and Burns they weren't playing the trap.

Ok ok ok, so they're not randomly jumping on each other, they're strategically organized jumping on each other.
