  • My God! It's full of stars!

What a freakin' amazing picture of the Sombrero Galaxy from the Hubble Space Telescope!

Hubble images of the universe. The page includes science images, Hubble Friday images, mission operations images, and servicing mission images
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I'm always skeptical of telescope images, they almost always 'enhance' it in some way.

While true, in actual fact all images are "enhanced".

When I first read the title to this thread I thought you were talking about a PC game by Mare Crisium!

Gotta love those funky shaped WF/PC2 images.

And yeah, Osweld - most ST images are substantially "enhanced" since they're not limited to visible spectrum on the imaging side, but they are limited to it on the output side, otherwise you couldn't "see" the image.

They're not creating anything that's not there, but they're translating it into the much narrower range of the EM spectrum that you can see.

True, dat. But the Sombrero Galaxy image is more breathtaking.
