It would have been nice to found Madrid on a hilly landscape...
Hopefully with a river running through some grasslands too.
And some lux- goods and cows would have been the perfect dream.

I will settle in the hills outside town and lead my flock of goats, until we meet another culture.
I will talk politely to them then, and ask them to leave my hills.
    Hasta la vista, I say...

Well, we must scout for a great spot the first few turns.
With hills for my bearded four-legged warriors to wander.

Unfortunately, as Spain, we don't start the game with pottery and cannot build granaries from turn one. We can, however, utilize bonus tiles turn one provided that we get them. Irrigating a bonus tile (and reaping the added food benefits from it) will take 4 turns provided we have a juicy river nearby. Then... emphasize mining at a secondary location.

OTOH, in an idealized scenario where we start in good location and begin researching pottery immediately and have science jacked up to about 90% (assuming all this), it will take a MINIMUM of about 20 turns to discover pottery and then 60shields/city's production = X# of turns to build a granary. It will probably take alot more than this, especially if our researching priorities are elsewhere.

Now if we had bonus tiles that could have been producing even 1 extra food all those turns and we didn't utilize it, we would have started the game by denying ourselves a faster turnover rate for city growth because 2 excess food bails = growth every 10 turns and 3 excess food bails = growth every 7 turns and 4 excess food bails = growth every 5 turns.

And, of course, this is all provided if...

If no one else is available I just got my copy of the game today, but since this is my first DG I would prefer to wait a little more, just being outside the govern during the first turns.

Anyway if no one else is, I'm available.

          Thanks for stepping up oliverfa

I have had PtW since the 8th but I fear that I would run the worker corps right into the ground

Thanks for all the input. So to boil it down, there are options:
(Note that these are in the order in which I thought of them to summarize, no, I'm not claiming ownership of any of these plans, not in the order I like them )
1)Mine & Granary on Food Terrain
          2)Irrigate on Production Terrain
          3)Road System
4)Disband Worker, declare that the Almighty Banana will do our work for us if we worship It properly

          EDIT: Edited is in italics

            ruby_maser,

We could always get lucky and end up near an expansionist civ willing to trade us the seemingly less valuable Pottery tech for our alphabet or ceremonial burrial

If not, Pottery is the cheapest tech in the game... we can research pretty quickly before dropping our research rate down to 10% and bee-lining for Monarchy.

Of course, we're talking about researching all this AFTER bronse working, right?

I should hope so. Bronze Working is the first priority. We can't survive too long if everyone else has it and we do not. Not to research it first would be sheer folly.

It may prove vital to our survivance to research bronze working ASAP, because in a standard sized world civs tend to meet pretty soon, and it is much unlikely we will not have dangerous civs as GS and GoW at our borders (LI is also dangerous). Thinking of us unprepared for an early rush (and an early rush is a possibility) kinda gives me the chills!

my point exactly-- our research priorities would be elsewhere at first

just irrigate the d@#% bonus tiles if we get 'em

is there any way we can use the alliance with the Legoland to get bronzeworking and something else good?

[RP] What do we need this bronze for? Can’t we have our own Spanish technology and research squidworking instead? You know, we could squirt squid ink at our enemies, blinding them. Then we whack them with the de-inked squid, then we let the squid feed on their unconscious bodies... [/RP]

This talk of squid is foolish. We need to speak of real things, like clubs, and demons!

                              RP

I am not sure it is foolish. The squid seems really to be a multipurpose tool, except that it can also be eaten, which can not be done with all others multipurpose tools.

So, go for Spanish tech. I wonder how Legoland will react when we give them the squidworking in exchange of horse riding...

[RP] What is more real than the squid? And you can use the squid as a club. And if one gets thrown at you in the middle of the night, it scares the breeches off you just as effectively as a demon would. I found that out when I was coming home from the Iberian Tavern last night. [/RP]
