  • Editor is a POS

Got the purty tin box, put it in and, fired 'er up...

Good old, earth map...what better place to start...? Hmm, no 'Historical or Random' starting positions...ahh, must be a later screen...

BAH! What I thought was the Thames turned out to be the Ganges...surely they can't expect us to set such things in the Editor, can they??

Out of the game, into editor. Note the lack of an EVENTs option like in FW...

    Hmmm....hrrMMMmmm....

PEOPLE: How do I set specific starting locations in the editor???!!! All I can do is change the random start area!

    HEEELLLPP!!

Maybe start a petition for Firaxis/Infogrames to open source the savegame format and the editor? I asked Firaxis that very question a few months back

      ....they never answered....
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Comparison Between Civ 2 FW/MGE and Civ III

        Civ 2
        -Had scenarios, easily editable everything
        -multiple EASILY ACCESSIBLE zoom levels
-Stable in Windows, so you could run napster, wordperfect, Internet Explorer in the background.
-Had historical starting spots on a good earth map. With Julius B.'s diplomap, you could play on a really good huge map
        -poor graphics

        Civ3
-no real scenario editor despite what was said
        -earth map is an abortion
-NO HISTORICAL STARTING SPOTS!! Not even the ability to set them..
-It took me 3 hours to figure out how to use the 2 level zoom
        -Forget about multitasking
-very nice graphics. I have no graphical complaints about the game (the absolute last consideration in a civ game)
-The resource model of trading is very cool, better than the old caravans.

Final Analysis: Hopefully, an expansion will make the game good for something besides random map play.

It's odd isn't it? The editor is only good for tweaking things and the map o' Earth sucks. But the game play is pretty good so far (almost finished a full game).

How do you zoom in the editor? I can't find it anywhere?

Youre right, the single player, random map experience is perfect, but to play with anything else so far is worse than civ2

Its ironic, the random map experiences in Civ 2 were 'poor' to say the least. Now in Civ 3, the opposite has occured. Random maps are excellent, but we've lost the ability to control where we start on set maps.
