Okosling, given that you just started into civ2 and also had to proceed without wonders your game was well played. Keep going!

Monk and Solo, I have looked at your games closer and you both made very good use of stations and qualified trade routes, Monk allready in his last tournament game. That´s something I could have done better and I will try to implement that more in future games. I had two channel cities in my game thinking of a trade route to the North. But that was a futile effort because the Western route was much better including the cities founded West of Romans and Sioux.

May be we should also explore a more permanent use of the lux slider in other games. The math looks simple: build your civ 25% stronger and you can leave the lux slider at 20% throughout the game. In the end when the tech costs go up, you can go for 90/10 using elvises and spending some surplus food. But this is probably easier said than done and it also points to even more expansive games. And with happiness wonders available it may not be neccessary.

To avoid any misunderstandings: I am also in favour of a conquest game as the next tournament game.

      Zenon,

I agree about using luxuries more and will try this in the next game. No need for you to work on improving your trade routes. You are doing okay already without giving this any more attention!

        Zenon,

What do you mean by 25% stronger civ??

BTW, I suspect solo is wanting you to hold off on any more improvements to your game (like better routes) so that the rest of us will have a chance to catch up to you. I agree!!

          Thank you, Monk!

But Solo staying behind is the least of my worries. In fact, the only way to pass him in a game is to take chances with some unknown strategy. And this will hold only one game!

About the stronger civilization: I meant that we normally try to build a civilization that allows one tech a turn at 100% science once we have finished the growth and build up phase. To reach one tech a turn at 80% science needs a stronger civilization.

So, does stronger imply more extensive and widespread use of library, university, research lab, and superhighway; or do you have something else in mind.

Monk, I have no detailed plan yet, how to do this. It would depend on the setup of an ELG. But my initial thought would be to have more cities. Solo has shown, that it is possible to expand in a way to have 2 techs a turn from science (plus 1 tech from trade) in the end game. This needs a build up that is 100% stronger. The idea is to stop expansion earlier when you reach a 25% surplus on what you would need for 1 tech a turn, leave the lux slider at 20% and save resources you would otherwise spend on happiness wonders or happiness improvements. I don´t know if this would be an advantage, but it might be worth to test it.

I have been away in civ3 land, and just read this thread now. I already knew how good you guys were but landing in 835ad without building wonders!

Even if Zenon's cities didn't build wonders, the game itself is a wonder of the world. I almost feel dizzy just contemplating how good that date is.

                Well done everyone else too.

Could some friendly Mod un-Top the September and October Tournaments now?

Surely there is some kind moderator out there who could un-top these.

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought Rah was moderator for the Civ2 forums. We've had drop-ins from MarkG and Lord Nuclear, but no sign of Rah lately...

Actually... I'm the official mod of the Civ II forums. Rah, like myself, also has site wide mod rights and can act any where he sees fits, but technically, these are my forums. Since I don't get many complaints (like never) from this forum, I assume people will PM me when some action is needed...
                          Keep on Civin'
RIP rah, Tony Bogey & Baron O
