krazy: this is certainly the perfect move at this stage of the game, although it depends whether you built the academy in the right city. you'll want shïtloads of commerce there (so towns, luxuries or water tiles). you'll want to build the oxford university in that city too along with all the other science buildings, eventually bringing it to +250% science, making it a technology powerhouse.

using the scientist for a tech is something that's worth it from late-mid-game on. and golden ages are also more for later on.

your next one you might want to settle in that city too. short term he "only" gives you 6 beakers and one hammer. but 6 * 350% = 21 beakers... from each super citizen scientist!

That was kind of my thought. So I'll keep that in mind. I'm working now to get some towns going at that city.

Always build Academies and other wonders that give similar bonuses in cities with the least amount of commerce. This is a good way to even things out, thus making research much quicker and efficient.

aebbeka, you just proposed the exact oposite of me... interesting.

but tell me... in a city with virtually no commerce, how is +50% going to help? 0 * 150% = 0!

and civ4 is all about specialised cities! of course it's great if all cities have great commerce, but oftentimes a city might be very low on that but instead have a fantastic production. why wouldn't you want to boost the production and forfait science?

As for my strategy, it actually helps a lot. When somebody other than myself gets a Great Scientist and builds an Academy in a weak city, I stay much less behind than I would if it was built in their best city.

personally i find the best use of great scientists is as scouts. they easily befuddle ignorant barbarians with their clever ways and there is always a chance they might discover to a new species of mushroom or frog in that big verdant jungle.
