    Wait, what?

    I would have voted:

    1) Rome - 3 point
    2) Sumaria - 2 points
    3) Ottomans - 1 point

        Done.

On a different note at 0500 today someone posted we had 24 hours to decide so why the hell did you put in the vote at 11:38? That would have meant we had a full 17 hours and change left to vote. Surely we could have waited to submit for at least 12 more hours just in case someone showed up to vote.

          • While people are explaining can people also explain to me why you voted for the Ottomans instead of the vastly better and more useful Romans? The odds are, with all the other war mongering civs in the game, that we will be dead long before we ever get to our post gunpowder UU so why bother with it?

            • Well, as you can see from the chart posted earlier (mine at least) Ottomans had better scores in both starting techs and UB. It was close though.

              Ottomans
              Tech - 17 points
              UU - 10 points
              UB - 22.5 points

              Rome
              Tech - 15 points
              UU - 18 points
              UB - 15 points

Rome certainly had an edge when it came to the Praetorian, but not enough to overcome the Ottoman strengths in other areas. Of course, my other two favorites had early UUs also which I liked. I (and others) just weren't fans of the Roman Forum, and I (and others) consider UBs to be more important then UUs since they are used for the entire game.

              • I'll update the vote totals to include votes from Oerdin & Dick76.

Ottomans - 16 points (listed by 8 out of 9 voters)
Rome - 13 points (listed by 6 out of 9 voters)
Sumeria - 12 points (listed by 7 out of 9 voters)
Korea - 6 points (listed by 3 out of 9 voters)
Carthage - 5 points (listed by 2 out of 9 voters)
Mali - 2 points (listed by 1 out of 9 voters)

                • Dinner, I said we had 24 hours to decide not as a "rule" (since the vote wasn't to us), but as a rough estimate. Ozzy jumped the gun a bit perhaps, though.

Agreed that UBs are way more useful, especially if we aren't going to be very aggressive early on. With the UU, maybe we use it for a part of the game (maybe not); with the UB, we use it for most of the game for sure. UB>>>UU

                    • Thanks.

Ok, so it has been 24 hours now and two more votes have come in (Dinner & Dick76) and, as I suspected, the result is the same. Ottomans still the top choice:

Ottomans - 16 points (listed by 8 out of 9 voters)
Rome - 13 points (listed by 6 out of 9 voters)
Sumeria - 12 points (listed by 7 out of 9 voters)
Korea - 6 points (listed by 3 out of 9 voters)
Carthage - 5 points (listed by 2 out of 9 voters)
Mali - 2 points (listed by 1 out of 9 voters)

Those points are nice and all but their exact values seem a bit arbitrary to me. Plus when it comes to UBs almost every city gets a market but most don't build aquaducts except in the key core cities or at least not until later in the game. Sure, a UB which actually gets built is better than one which rarely gets built?

The point is mute now though so it's all spilled milk especially since the Ottomans won in their own right. Still, other than the starting techs I'm not sure what sets the ottomans up as the best choice unless we survive to gunpowder but even then musketmen just don't last long in the game as they quickly get replaced by riflemen so even their UU is of extremely limited value. Much better to have improved swordsmen which are useful for about half the game, IMO.

                        • Both mzprox and me tend to build quite a lot aquaducts in each game.. and probably in this game we'll build hammams before temples..

                          • well i don't often build aqueducts, but in this case we will. it's not much more expensive than a colosseum and gives 2 happyness instead of 1 (also 2 healths).
if we happen to go after the hanging gardens (most likely in the capital) we get two extra happyness along the way.

                              • Interestingly with the delay and if Guy had turned up and voted 'I support Dinner choice' the Civ vote would have been very, very close. especially if I hadn't switched.
