  • V 1.61; video driver reset to standard VGA

    Sometimes when playing Civ IV; the video locks up, resets itself to ancient-standard VGA mode with a popup the (such and such) video driver has stopped responding and been reset to Standard VGA (unsupported). Restart the computer to restore full functionality. I haven't been able to determine a precise immedidate cause yet. (Quickest time from start of the session to this occuring was 5 minutes while it's also ran fine for 2 hours. One time this occured opening city manager window, another time it occured scrolling on the map. All occurances were on a fractal map [3 main contenits] during the Middle Age & Renanance Eras.)

    This never happened before the 1.61 patch: The worst that would happen under 1.52 is I'd get an out of video memory message caught by Civ IV that just messed up the graphics on the small overview of the map.

    Graphics Settings used:
    Low,
    Low-res terraign,
    City Detail Info on,
    Grid Lines on,
    Unit Health bar on,
    Numeric Pad Help on,
    everything else off.

    This is on an Averatec 5400 AMD Athlon XP-M 2800 notebook with 512 MB DDR RAM.
    Checking Windows updates: There's a few security updates it needs; and a new ethernet & wireless router, but nothing video related. (Downloading the updates now)

    I had the same, similar problem with the new patch as well. I would get an error message about ialmrnt5 display driver. Or something like that. My only solution, being very computer illiterate, was to uninstall CivIV and reinstall it with the 1.56 patch.

      Well, I googled your laptop:
      Hardware:

      * Averatec 5400 series laptop (available only at Walmart), $999
      * AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+
      * 40GB hard drive, ATA-100 Ultra-DMA support
      * 512MB DDR memory - 200-pin SDRAM SO-DIMM
      * 15" XGA TFT LCD screen (1024x768x16M colors), S3 UniChrome Pro IGP graphics processor
      * DVD +/-RW burner
      * Built-in 802.11g wireless
      * Ports: VGA, Ethernet, modem, mic, headphone, 4 USB ports
      * Pointing device: GlidePad touchpad
      * Weight: ~8 lbs.
      There's your problem, it's got an S3 UniChrome Pro IGP graphics processor video chip on it, instead of an nVidia or ATi chip (I prefer nVidia, because their drivers are better than ATi's).

      Either your video chip isn't good enough, (in which case you're out of luck, although that's probably not the case, since it used to run fine), or the driver is buggy, and there might or might not be a newer, fixed, version on the manufacturer's website.

      Looks like you're out of luck there, no updated video driver.
      If you want to try and install a different driver, it's probably one of the drivers enumerated here, but I have no idea which one:

      Warning: trying one of these drivers is risky and might seriously mess up your system if you don't know what you're doing. Don't say I didn't warn you!
