I too was scared that CivIV would require too much of my computer to be able to run, but I was plesantly suprised as CivIV runs much better than CivIII did... and it's still the same old lame computer. During modern age in CivIV I have to wait a few seconds, while the same situation in CivIII would make me wait for at least 5 minutesThis space is empty... or is it?

normally I would say laptops suck
but that one looks all right MrFun
although I was about to make fun of you when you said you were ready for "serious gaming" and you said Medieval Total War ran great on your system
you might want to use a more recent game (preferrably one that is graphics intensive) for benchmarking your system performance as it pertains to "serious gaming"
How does Freecell run on your new laptop?
But seriously.... GO GET CIV4....
RIGHT NOW!!!
trust me... after you get it, you will kick yourself for waiting so long to get it!!!To us, it is the BEAST.

Upgrade your computer and get over it. A decent video card will do all the rendering of the visuals for your processor. So what's your problem?
I'd rather the game run well regardless of how i'm playing it than have it run well only on top-of-the-line systems regardless of how you play. I don't want to spend $1500 on CivIV.
I brought up SMAC before because it had a smooth interface and, in general, it looked great and played even better. It wasn't 3d. It didn't tax my old system when i bought it a little while after it came out. I don't see a reason why Civ4 MUST be 3d. You can make graphics that look just as pretty in 2d.

Oh, and btw, if this game were released in 2D, you can say goodbye to flexibility, you can say goodbye to modability, your computer would have an even harder time trying to run it and you can say hello to another dead game.
could you please explain this part a bit? Why does 3D make it more flexible and modable?
Just a dump question from somebody not knowing enough about the connection between graphics and game concepts/mechanics.

A friend of mine was complaining about the bad graphics of Civ III and he was not alone. You can never satisfy everybody, it will be difficult and if they had given a choice of playing the game in 2D I am pretty sure that some would complain that the option existed . As with everything in life you will have to compromise except if you can afford to hire Sid so that he can program a a game just for you!
The game is awesome!

And it comes with some other free software to speedup your PC through tweeks.
And www.liutilities.com has good advice regarding windows processes and whether you should turn them off or not.

I guess Civ (only) gamers aren't used to this...
I've had to buy upgrades/new PCs/new consoles many times for various games. Luckily I had to get a new PC for Half Life 2 anyway.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth
