@;Ctesiphon
@PEDIAIMPROVE39
Counts as a Granary in every one of your cities;
Ctesiphon, near modern-day Baghdad, used to be reknown of its riches capital
of pagan Persia. Though it was abandoned by (ascetic at the beginning)
Muslim conquerors, its architecture had enormous influence on
future Muslim art. Why Pyramids? Because Iraq was as fertile
as Egypt - and for strategic reasons.

@;Qubbath As-Sakhra
@PEDIAIMPROVE40
One extra happy citizen in every city;
The Dome of the Rock, standing on the place of old Jerusalemian
Temple, is one of the most sacred places to Islam. According to Muslim beliefs,
Muhammad had a miraculous travel on fameous "horse" named Buraq to this place one nigh
and was taken to Heaven from there. Except for that, the Dome covers a stone on which
Isaac was supposed to be sacrified. The mosque itself, resembling earlier churches
of Jerusalem, is a masterpiece of (Umayyad) Byzantine art.
Why Hanging Gardens? There's a long tradition of making happyness wonders places of cult.
And it is a sacred place to Christianity, Islam and Judaism too.

@;Umayyads' Mosque
@PEDIAIMPROVE41
City produces one extra trade arrow in each square that
already produces one;
This mosque, considered the first example of monumental Muslim art,
decorated by Byzantine artworkers and built on place and partially out of
Christian basilica devoted to St John the Baptist (his head, as the head of
prophet Yahya, was kept inside) was supposed to be a place where Jesus would
come at the Ordeal. Many mosques followed the example of this one.
Why Colossus? To make Damascus a good trading place.

@;Abu Mina/Lighthouse
@PEDIAIMPROVE42
Triremes can move across oceans w/o danger, and all other
types of ship have their movement rate increased by one.
Also, all new ships you produce receive veteran status;
Lighthouse we all know, Abu Mina is a place where saint
Manias is buried and as a spiritual centre and place of
pilgrimages, helds a big significance to the Copts.

@;Lalibela
@PEDIAIMPROVE43
Obsolete;
Lalibela is a place named after one of the Aethiopian rulers who decided to
create New Jerusalem... They say that 11 churches carved in solid rock are really
impressing. And why shouldn't they be? Each night God was was sending his angels to
help the builders. Inside of one of the churches, on a pillar,
Christ was said to have written the future of mankind, but Lalibela decided that
people should not see it, and covered the pillar with fabric that covers it up to
today.

@;Outremer conquered!
@PEDIAIMPROVE44
Doubles the effect of all of your temples;
The Mamluk Sultanate was the state to finally get rid of Crusaders' states from
Middle East. Only Edessa has fallen earlier; rest of them was destroyed by mamluks.
When they appeared, Christians were helding almost all MiddleEastern ports, from Asqalon through entire
coast of Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, and southern Turkey, not minding a lot of castles inlands. They were also
on their way to conquer Egypt. Mamluks not only halted St Louis in Egypt, but conquered last remains of Edessa
(Qal'at ar-Rum), conquered Antioch, captured Trypolis, destroyed Acco, crushed Armenia, and humilitated Cyprus.
Everything that Christians were protecting with so many crusades, was destroyed. Defence seemed hopeless,
and crusades didn't try to fight Mamluks; crusades were going in another directions, and even when they hit Alexandria,
they were afraid to defend it. Mamluks were also the ones to oppose the Portugeese on Indian Ocean later.
For many years, they, not Ottomans, were the greatest Muslim power and the ones to be claimed the sword of Islam.

@;Mccheta
@PEDIAIMPROVE45
Obsolete;
The Sweti Cchoweli cathedral in Mccheta is the centre of Orthodox church of Georgia,
and all the Georgian patriarchs are buried there. It is also one of the nicest example
of -very original- Georgian architecture. Personally I consider Georgian churches
the nicest of eastern ones... Sharing with Armenian ones some of their features, as
spiky top and stone sculptures instead of mosaics, they are much lighter to me and their
proportions are just perfect. The only ones that can be compares to them are some early
Ruthenian churches - notabene under Georgian influence.

@;Great Citadel
@PEDIAIMPROVE46
All new ground units produced gain Veteran status.
Any unit which wins a combat gains Veteran status.;
Great Citadel of Aleppo was not only one of the best fortresses
of the region, and an important strategical point for many centuries,
I like the look of the main entrance too...
Why Sun Tzu? Why not?

@;Acco
@PEDIAIMPROVE47
Every square in the city's radius produces an extra
resource "shield";
Well, Acco was the richest -perhaps except for Antioch-
and biggest of Latin cities in Levant. In late Outremer period,
it almost ruled itself alone, as well as every other bigger city
of Kingdom of Jerusalem - that is one of the reasons that made it fall I guess.
Anyway, the city was an important historical point. During the third
crusade it -still being in Muslim hands- was besieged by crusaders being
themselves besieged by Saladin. After being captured, it became the seat
of Jerusalemian king, as Jerusalem remained in Saladin's hands despite all
efforts by Richard the Lion-Hearted. Later on, it became a great trading centre,
with Pisean, Venetian and Genoan quaters fighting each other. The great, double,
city walls seemed to assure its safeness...
Why Richard? Well, it was taken by him, and anyway I need Latins to
be lively in Palestine!

@;Holy Sepulchre
@PEDIAIMPROVE48
You receive a free embassy with every rival Civilization (so
your intelligence report will always be complete and you will
receive updates when other civilizations discover technologies).;
The place where Christ was buried was discovered by saint empress Helene,
mother of saint emperor Constantine, and it was him who built the first
basilica there. It was destroyed by Fatimid caliph Al-Haqim and rebuilt
by Byzantines. Destroyed again by the Seldjuk Turks, it was rebuilt by
the crusaders, and the church we see today was their work in largest part.
Why Marco Polo? Every Christian nation would be interested in who posess
their saint city and relationships could easily be established.

@;Ince Minare
@PEDIAIMPROVE49
Counts as a Cathedral in each of your cities;
Ble ble ble. Really nice mosque in Konya, capital of
Seldjuk Turks of Anatolia, with great stonework. It is named after its big minaret,
who unfortunatelly was injured by a lightning I think. I'm not sure if
I won't change this wonder to sth else.

@;Al-Azhar
@PEDIAIMPROVE50
Increases science output of city by 50%%.;
The university established by Armenian visier of Fatimid dinasty
of shii caliphs soon after the Egypt was conquered by them.
Originally dedicated to spreading strange Fatimid version of Islam,
it became the center of Sunni science that it remained up to today
when Fatimid caliphate was put down by its sunni Kurd visier, Saladin,
almost precisely two centuries later.
Why Copernicus it's obvious.

@;Sana
@PEDIAIMPROVE51
Movement rate of all ships is increased by two.;
The city of Sana is reknown for its characteristical buildings, of
dark bricks with white patterns of windows and doors etc It looks really nice
and stuff. Except for that, it was the capital of Yemen and very important city through
history. Why Magellan's? because Yemen was a point on the way to India... In fact I wished
to have Zabid (Adam Smith) wonder to show the profits of it, but decided to use it otherwise.

@:Eczmiadzyn
@PEDIAIMPROVE52
All unhappy citizens in city are content;
Eczmiadzyn, near modern-day Armenian capital, Erywa/Erewan, is the centre of Armenian church,
and the sit of Armenian catholicos (one of them). Armenian church, the first national church
ever, was a thing that kept the Armenians together across their sad history. Today, unlike most
of other historical Armenian places, it is within the borders of tiny Armenian Republic.

@;Persepolis
@PEDIAIMPROVE53
Whenever one of your units becomes obsolete because of a new
technology you have discovered, it is immediately replaced
by an equivalent modern unit.;
"The city of Persians" whose true name isn't known, still is
an impressing sight though its destruction by Alexander the Great who
revenged this way on persians that destroyed Athenes and its Acropolis
earlier, took place over 2000 years ago...
Why leonardo? Strategy.

@;Hagia Eirene
@PEDIAIMPROVE54
Decreases unhappy citizens on same continent by 2 per city.;
According to what I read, actually this was the patriarchate church
of Constantinople, not Hagia Sofia, at least for some time. The church
of the Peace is the only one that still plays a role of a Christian temple
of three great Constantinopolitan basilicas.

@;Al-Mustansiriyya
@PEDIAIMPROVE55
Doubles science output of city;
Established by caliph Al-Mustansir not at all that long before
the end of Baghdad caliphate, it was the first theological school
to house all four main schools of Muslim law, and example of
renaissance of Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad shortly before its fall.

@;Ar-rawk
@PEDIAIMPROVE56
Pays the maintenance for all city improvements which
ordinarily cost 1 gold per turn. City improvements
requiring more than 1 gold per turn maintenance are not
affected.;
Ar-rawk, financial system of Egypt, was established under
Saladin (so-called ar-rawk as-Salahi). According to it, the sultan was receiving 1/6
of ground taxes, amirs 5/12, and so was the guard of Saladin, halka.
Mamluk Sultans tried to change it on their benefit.

@;Faras
@PEDIAIMPROVE57
Obsolete;
Faras, a Nubian city of Christian times, is reknown for its magnificent fresques
discovered by Polish archeologists. It is the greatest remain of the passed culture
of Christian Nubia.

@;The Statue of Liberty
@PEDIAIMPROVE58
Obsolete;
We all know Pyramids. Here they have the same feature as in civ1.

@;Qalawun's Mosque
@PEDIAIMPROVE59
When you first obtain control of the Eiffel Tower,
Every civilization's attitude toward you is immediately shifted 25 points
in your favor (on a hundred point scale). Attitudes continue to improve
gradually over time. Other civilizations are also quicker to forget your
past transgressions.;
Ironically, in the times that Mamluk Egypt was closing the last chapters of
Outremer's chronicles, sultan Qalawun built a mosque which as the only
one in Egypt or even entire MidEast bears some visible Latin influence.
I consider this mosque the nicest of all magnificent mosques of Cairo,
and Cairo is full of examples of great Muslim religious architecture.
Why Eiffel? I don't know ;) I surely had some reason for that ;)

@;Abbasids' Sultanate (in Cairo)
@PEDIAIMPROVE60
Counts as a Police Station in every one of your cities.
(Decreases unhappiness caused by troops away from city by 1);
In my scn, I switched the Egyptian gouverment to democracy
to show the instability of it. Remember that every fight against a Muslim state
was a sin, and against Christians didn't have to be welcomed wormly by
everyone too; by local Christians, by merchants... and even when it was welcomed
warmly, it was by other generals who might use this war for improving their position
in Egypt. After Abbasids were installed in Cairo, the caliph gave Baybars the right
to rule practically all that he will conquer. By this, at least for a while, all
the conquests of Baybars were somewhat legitimised.

@;Antioch
@PEDIAIMPROVE61
Provides Watermill power to every city on every continent;
Antioch, the capital of diadoch kingdom of Seleukids, built near
the former capital of Antigonids, kept the position of capital of Syria
until times of crusaders. In comparison to other hellenistic capitals,
especially to Alexandria, it was rather a modest when it comes to cultural
activities. But it had some plusses - they say it was kind of Paris of Ancient times,
ciy of fun and lust... Being the third biggest city of the world under Romans,
it was also one of most important cities for young Christianity. It was here that
pupils of Jesus were called "christians" for the first time, and the city itself,
where St peter, St Paul and St Barnaba have preached, and it claims to have the oldest
church in the world, a cave of St Peter. Antioch was one of five patriarchates and
an important place for Christian theology developement. Since Arab conquests its
position was falling, but still it remained an important city. It played an important
role under Byzantines, and as a capital of Latin duchy it was a cause of hostility between
Romans-Byzantines and the crusaders. Though it was systematically loosing its position on
benefit of Halab/Aleppo, it remained a very important and incredibly rich city until
Mamluk conquest and slaughter.
Why Hoover Dam? To strenghten up the Latins!

@;Circassian Sultanate
@PEDIAIMPROVE62
Not working
The mamluks of Tcherkessia (Circassia?), known as Burgites
(after Towers -because they were at the start guarding the towers
of Cairo), were introduced to Egypt as a counterweight to turkish mamluks.
Eventually they dominated the state. Much later, but who cares.

@;Acropolis
@PEDIAIMPROVE63
^* Free embassy with every other civilization
^* Enemy civ's cannot refuse your peace treaties.
^* As a democracy, you can declare war 50%% of the time
^  (peacekeeping missions).;
We all know the Acropolis of Athens.
Now, why UN? To make it all harder for You, of course!
And to reflect that latin states after all could always
count on diplomatical pressure of the West.

@;Hagia Sofia
@PEDIAIMPROVE64
Obsolete;
Well, it's the second of three great basilicas of Constantinople.
This one was devoted to the Wisdom. The greatest of all Christian churches
for a thousand years, it wasn't copied by byzantine architects because of
lack of money, but after the conquest of Cople by the Turk, the example of it
dominated Turkish architecture (Sinan was a Greek...) up till today.

@;Ghurid Mosque
@PEDIAIMPROVE65
Counts as a research lab in every one of your cities; effectively
doubles your science output;
The friday (great) mosque of Herat was built by a sultan of Ghurid
dinasty, on a place that used to be sacred to pagan cult of fire.
Though redecorated by later rulers, including Timurids, it preserved
what it was supposed to preserve, and is a magnificent example of
Muslim iwan architecture. Why SETI? I think it was in those regions
(central Asia) that madrasa institution was borned. Somewhere in Tadjikistan
I think was the first one.

@;Al-Ka'aba
@PEDIAIMPROVE66
One extra happy citizen in each city.;
As Patricia Crone proves, al-Ka'aba before Muhammad was nothing
more than a temple/sacred point in a small and unimportant village.
According to Muslim beliefs, al-Ka'aba it was originally
a place of monotheistic cult introduced by Abraham later spoiled
by politheists and reintroduced to monotheism by Islam (In fact,
I find the story pretty naive, but will not discuss it here).
Al-Ka'aba is a place to which Muslim pilgrims come from all over
the world and a sign of Muslim unity.

@title=Civilization: Governments
The form of government you choose for your civilization will
affect the way resources are distributed in your cities, the
rate at which your citizens can produce and sustain new units
and city improvements, and the extent to which your citizens
have a say in the way you govern them.
^
Some forms of government, such as Despotism, Monarchy, and
later Communism and Fundamentalism, allow you to expand
rapidly, to produce and sustain large numbers of military
units, and to control your affairs completely.
^
Democracy and the Republic, on the other hand, give your
citizens the freedom to produce vast amounts of trade, which
increases your wealth and knowledge rapidly. On the other
hand, your citizens may grow unhappy when you send military
units out of your cities; also, your Senate may try to
interfere in your conduct of foreign affairs.
^
To change your civilization's government, you must have a
Revolution--select "Revolution" from the Kingdom Menu. This
will entail a brief period of Anarchy.

@PEDIAGOVT0
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Gouverment nr 0
Gouverment nr 0 represents not so much a government type as the
lack of any stable government. It occurs when your
civilization's government falls, or when you decide to
have a Revolution. After a few turns of anarchy, you will
be able to reconstitute your government.
^
Gouverment nr 0 is similar to nr 1, except that the corruption
rate is VERY HIGH (see entry for Despotism). However, no
taxes are collected during a period of gouverment nr 0, and no
scientific research is conducted.

@PEDIAGOVT1
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Gouverment nr 1
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit above the city size costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting an unhappy citizen into a content
citizen.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
It has a HIGH rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a gouverment nr1, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 60%%. ALSO, ANY SQUARE WHICH WOULD ORDINARILY
PRODUCE THREE OR MORE OF A RESOURCE (FOOD, SHIELDS, TRADE) PRODUCES
ONE LESS.
^
^HINTS
Because of its high rate of corruption, it is almost
always an inferior form of government. Try to switch to a
Monarchy as soon as possible.

@PEDIAGOVT2
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: gouverment nr 2
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit beyond the third costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting an unhappy citizen into a content
citizen.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
It has a MODERATE rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a gouv nr2, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 70%%.
^
^HINTS
Gouverment nr2 is an excellent form of government for a young
civilization.

@PEDIAGOVT3
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Gnr3
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit beyond the third costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting *TWO* unhappy citizens into
content citizens (so a total of SIX unhappy citizens can
be suppressed).
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Under Gnr3, state control of the economy eliminates
organized crime. Your cities, therefore, experience no
corruption.
^
^SPECIAL
All SPY units produced under Gnr3 governments are
given VETERAN status. Under Gnr3, none of the
science/tax/luxury rates may be set higher than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Gnr3 is best for large, far-flung empires which need
to maintain a large military.

@PEDIAGOVT4
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Gouverment 4
^UNIT SUPPORT
Can support up to TEN units for free; additional
units cost one shield each. Settlers eat one
food per turn. ONLY Gouverement 4 may produce
FANATIC units.
^
^HAPPINESS
Under Gnr4, NO CITIZEN IS EVER UNHAPPY!
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
It has a LOW rate of corruption.
However, Fundamentalism has the special disadvantage that
all SCIENCE is HALVED.
^
^SPECIAL
Improvements which convert unhappy citizens to
content citizens (Temples, etc.)
produce "tithes" equal to the number of citizens they would
otherwise convert. They also require no maintenance.
The diplomatic penalties for "terrorist acts" committed by
your Diplomats and Spies are reduced.
Under Gnr4, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Gnr4 eliminates all happiness problems and provides
an excellent revenue. Scientific research tends to languish.

@PEDIAGOVT5
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Gnr5
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit costs one shield per turn. Settlers eat TWO
food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Each military unit AFTER THE FIRST which is not in a friendly
city (or a fortress within 3 spaces of a friendly city)
causes one citizen in its home city to become unhappy.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
This gouverment has a LOW rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Gnr5, each square which ordinarily produces at
least one unit of trade produces an extra unit.
None of the science/tax/luxury rates may be set higher
than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Switching to a Gnr5 can give an astounding boost to your
science and tax revenues, although you'll probably have to
divert some of your trade to luxuries. It becomes more
difficult (and expensive) to keep an army in the field, but
building the Womens Suffrage wonder can help with this
problem.

@PEDIAGOVT6
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Gnr6
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit costs one shield per turn. Settlers eat TWO
food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Each unit which is not in a friendly
city (or a fortress within 3 spaces of a friendly city)
causes TWO citizens in its home city to become unhappy.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Gnr6 experiences NO corruption or waste.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Gnr6, each square which ordinarily produces at
least one unit of trade produces an extra unit.
The units and cities of a Democracy are immune to BRIBERY
of all forms.
The science/tax/luxury rates may be set to any level
desired.
^
^HINTS
Gnr6 can produce spectacular amounts of revenue and
scientific research. However, because of the severe
happiness restrictions on military units, this form of
government tends to be viable only for large, advanced
civilizations. Increasing your luxuries rate and building
Wonders can help alleviate this problem.
