^
^Following the Second World War, the Korean Peninsula, which had been under Japanese
^dominion for almost half a century, was divided into two countries: a Communist state
^in the north called the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (or just North Korea)
^under Chairman Kim Il-Sung, which was close in relations to the USSR and the People's
^Republic of China; and a non-Communist Republic of Korea (or just South Korea), under
^President Syngman Rhee, which is friendly to the United States; both divided at the
^38th Parallel. In June of 1950, there was significant opposition in South Korea to
^Syngman Rhee's regime. Seeing an opportunity to be viewed as the "liberator of South
^Korea" and the "unifier of Korea," and using those titles to quell growing opposition
^to his rule in the North, Kim Il-Sung invaded the South with an army significantly
^equipped by the Soviet Union, in hopes of bringing all of Korea under his thumb. In
^response to Kim's invasion, the United Nations (currently boycotted by the Soviet Union)
^approved a military response under American leadership. A UN task force, commanded by
^General Douglas MacArthur, landed at Pusan just as the first shots are fired. You should
^play as either the North Koreans or the United Nations: they have the biggest role and
^the most chance of winning. You may try the South Koreans or Chinese, though be warned
^they are much more challenging, largely due to their lower tech level. The Soviets and
^Japanese aren't meant to be seriously played. The North Koreans are the Protagonist, and
^all Korean cities, North and South, are objectives.
