^William was never a popular King. Ill-tempered and tyrannical, he
alienated his people and made many enemies. Perhaps the worst of his enemies
was the Chancellor Rucillus, forced to flee for his life forty-six years ago
after a newly-crowned William began to suspect him of treason. Rucillus
waited out his exile patiently, but never forgot the insult he had suffered.
^Six months ago, William sent his illegitimate son and general Maximillian
west, along with most of Arkan's Legions, to conquer distant lands. Rucillus
seized his chance. Taking the palace by black magic, he put all the royal
family to death except the infant Prince Sebastian, who was rescued by the
minor merchant Penth. Acting in the name of the one remaining member
of the royal family, Penth raised the countryside in revolt against
Rucillus, who had declared himself King.
^It was at this point that Maximillian returned, victorious, from the West.
Reluctant to share his newly-won importance, Penth accused the bastard
General of conspiring with Rucillus and deliberately leaving his father
unprotected. A three-way civil war has begun.
