^^1916
^This year the center of gravity of the World War turns towards the Western Front. The Allies
^have suffered defeats in all the other fronts during the previous year. But the British force in
^France has grown to 36 divisions and by summer will be ready to take action.
^The Allies make an effort to obtain a unity of action. Leaders from the French, British, Italian,
^Belgian, Japanese and Russian armies meet at Joffre's headquaters. They decide the best action
^to break the Central Powers is to make a simultaneous offensive. But they recognize that time
^must be allowed for the British army to prepare, so the earliest chance for attack would be
^summer.
^But the Germans developed a plan to dislocate this scheme. German chief of staff, Falkenhayn,
^sees the real threat as the armies of France, Italy and Russia. He considered Russia already
^paralyzed, and Italy unlikely to go anywhere. That leaves France as the real threat. Falkenhayn
^plans on drawing the entire French army onto the battlefiled and annihilating it. Thus Verdun
