"The War of Cuba" is the tenth installment of J.B.'s series of
scenarios dedicated to Spain's history. You can find all of them at
the Spanish Civilization II Site (http://spanish.apolyton.net).

"The War of Cuba" is J.M.'s fifth scenario for Civ2. You can find
all of them at the Civilization Scenario Collection
(http://csc.apolyton.net). Some of these will also be posted shortly
on the Spanish Civilization Site (http://spanish.apolyton.net)

---
(This is gonna be a very short readme - I promise).

BACKGROUND

In the late XIX century, the Spanish Empire, reduced only to Cuba,
Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam, is about to come to an end.
A bloody revolt has begun in Cuba, "the Caribbean Pearl", "the Ever
Faithful Isle". In 1895 a rebel victory seems inevitable. Mother
Spain, alarmed, desperately plays her last card: Gral. Valeriano
Weyler is appointed Governor of Cuba. Weyler is an extremely
efficient officer. He is also very tough. Meanwhile, the United
States of America watches over...

INSTALLATION

This scenario will NOT work with Civ2 versions below 2.7.81, the one
provided by the Fantastic Worlds scenario disk. If you have it, make
a new folder under the Scenarios folder. Call it "Cuba" and put all
the files in it. Now open Civ2 in the regular way, select 'play a
scenario', open the Cuba folder and double-click on Cuba.scn. Have
fun.

The scenario has no sounds for the time being. But it will, sure it
will.

THE PLAYERS

*Spanish Royalists - Strongly recommended.

The Spanish are in a very complicate situation. They lost the
European train to industrialization and have become a poor country
with the richest colony in the World. Re-gain control of the island,
and stop the American imperialistic hunger! It is not going to be
easy because your army is short, poorly trained, and what is worse,
very expensive.

Paraphrasing my good friend Shay Yates Roberts, if you're able to
succeed with the Spanish in this scenario (that meaning a stalemate
or better), I (J.B.) will eat a bug... no wait, two bugs.

Tip: try to keep Weyler alive as long as possible. Not only because
it is your best unit but also because if you lose it early, some of
the pop-ups would make no sense at all.

Tip 2: after the Americans declare war on you, build coastal cannons,
the more the merrier.

Tip 3: remember that your army is very short!

*Cuban Patriots - Also recommended.

The Cubans control most of the island, except for the biggest cities.
You have lots of motivated troops, but taking a city will not be
piece of cake - the Spaniards defend themselves like demons! The best
example for that will be the siege of Santiago. Your best units are
your three generals, Gmez, Maceo, and Garca. Do not expose them to
unnecessary risks or suicide attacks, as they may become the key to
your success.

Tip: do not let the Americans to take over Santiago. That is a very
valuable city. The sooner you conquer it, the higher your winning
chances are!

*Americans - Playable (?) but not recommended.

You could play as the Americans too, but we do not recommend it
because you would have to wait 29 turns until the Spanish declare
war on you, and the scenario has only 38 turns. Aside from that,
perhaps it would be fun to try to wipe out the Spaniards from the
whole island in only 8 turns.

SOME MORE INFO.

As indicated above, the scenario has only 38 turns. It follows the
objectives system. There are 73 of these (WoWs do not count as such).
The Spanish -what a surprise- are set as protagonists of the scenario.
They begin with 37 objectives and need >44 for a marginal defeat,
>55 for a stalemate, >63 for a marginal victory, and >68 for a
decisive victory.

If you are playing with the Cubans, the same figures apply.

If you choose the Americans... you are probably wasting your time.

The scenario begins in Nov 1895, a few months after Mart's death.
Therefore he does not show up in the scenario (there is a unit
representing him in units.gif though. Go find it!). Nevertheless,
we decided to keep him as the leader of the Cubans. This is of course
our homage to a most honorable man.

The title of the scenario illustrates the departure of the quintos
(conscripts) from the port of Cdiz.

THANKYOUS

Most of the artwork appearing in this scenario was created by us
(signatures JMF and JBR in units.gif). We have "borrowed" a few
units from Allard Hfelt, Captain Nemo, Peter "Blackclove" Delaney,
and Lawrence (Lorenzo) Pirela. A couple of icons were borrowed
from Cam Hills.

Special thanks to Andrew Hoekzema, Gerrie Hoost, Matt Karis, Tatu
Ahponen, and Stefan Hrtel for comments and suggestions.
