Counts as a Granary in every one of your cities.
---
A city founded by exiles of Tyre, soon became a hegemon of all western
colonies of Phoenicians and, in fights against Greeks and Africans, built an
empire that threatened Rome and stimulated its first conquests. Destroyed after
the third punic war, it was rebuilt finally by Caesar and once again grew into
the capital of Africa and important center of Christianity. Captured by Vandals,
it was liberated by Justinian who organised African exarchate there. During the
times of Heraclius, Carthago almost became the capital of Roman state. Ironic.
Roman Africa was succesively, with Berber help, repealing Muslim armies until
Carthago finally fallen in 698AC and died under Muslim rule.
I remember, though, that some Muslims scholar placed impressing aqueducts of Carthago
as a wonder of the world

@;Hagia Sofia
@PEDIAIMPROVE40
One extra happy citizen in every city.
---
Constantine, founding his capital in place of Byzantion, built three secular basilicas,
Eirene - The Peace, Dynamis - The Might and Sophia - The Wisdom, to signify three pillars
of authority. These notions were connected rather with ideas of philosophy, but could also
be understood in Christian way. And that's what happened, esp. in the case of Sophia. She
started to be called St Wisedom, meaning - God's. This was the name of the basilica when
it became a church, a cathedral even. In the East, the name was undertstood as God's feature
or as a way of calling the Christ. In the West, people were keeping the Greek word, but
not understanding it's meaning.
Restoration of the church was necessary after the destructions of Nika rebel. Money
spent on this work was acquired from conquiscate of troublers' posessions after its end.
Architects were Antemius of Tralles and Isidor of Miletos. Both were fameous as mathematicians.
It is thanks to Isidor that the writings of Archimedes have survived.
I only add that the works started in year 532,
and inauguration was 26 december 537 and may 557 (Antemius' dome has fallen after an
earthquake. Isidor restored it).
BTW, Isn't it significant that Peace and Wisedom have survived, but
Might has at first changed its name (St.Apostles), and later was destroyed
by Turks?
Worth to mention that Hagia Sofia influenced Turkish architecture a lot
---Partly abbreviated part of: A.Krawczuk's "Suite of Byzantine emperors".

@;Lighthouse
@PEDIAIMPROVE41

---
The fameous Lighthouse of Faros was a marble tower built by Sostratos of Knidos, a friend of Hellenic
king of Egypt, Ptolemeos, on Faros island next to the capital of Ptolemeos, Alexandria. It was of three
condignations of different shapes, higher more narrow from the lower. The lowest condignation was square,
the higher octagonal and the highets was cylidnric. The last one contained a fire that helped ships on the
sea. Entire construction was at least 120m high and existed up to XIV century, when it was destroyed by an
earthquake. Up to this time, it managed to influence Muslim architecture, by giving it a model for its minarets.

After Alexander died, a fight between his generals started. One of them was Antigon the One-Eyed.
His state has soon fallen, and He died in battle, but He left something in this world. He founded
a capital, Antigoneia in Syria, kind of a predecessor of Antiochia of Seleucids. The other thing was his
son, Demetrios Poliorketes, founder of a dinasty in Macedonia and "the besieger of cities". His sobriquet
originates from his siege of Rodos, 305BC, when his father was still alive. Despite all his efforts, the
city was not taken, and He was forced to leave the island, leaving his siege engines behind. Citizens of
Rodos sold them, and for the enormous ammount of money, they decided to thank Helios, the "God" of the sun,
for salvation (they also thanked to the king of Egypt, Ptolemeos, for help, by calling him "Soter") Chares
of Lindos, pupil of Lysipos, was decided to build a giant statue of Helios. Works took 12 years, but the
effect was said to be astonishing, mostly due to the size of the statue, over 36m high. Unfortunatelly,
60 years after being finished, the statue fallen due to an earthquake in 227/225BC, but still impressed
and still existed until Muslim navy captured Rodos in 654AC and sold the remains to a Jewish trader of
Edessa. They say that 900 camels were needed to transport them.

@;Georgios Pisides
@PEDIAIMPROVE43
Civilization receives any civilization advance
already discovered by two other civilizations.
---
George of Pisidia in SE Asia Minor is considered the greatest secular Byzantine poet in VII century.
He used to work in Constantinople, on Heraclius' court and close to patriarch Sergius. He took part in first
Heraclius' expedition into Persia, and was present in the capital during the siege of the city by combined forces
of Slavs, Avars and Persians. He wrote poems about both those events, and one about final victory of Heraclius,
named Heraclias, but it is his "Six days of creation of the World" that is considered his greatest achievement.
He also wrote other works, including "Against godless Severus", in which He fights this heretic and monophysitism.
It is also surmised that fameous hymn Akathistos was not written by patriarch Sergios, but by Him.

@;Qubbath as-Sakhra
@PEDIAIMPROVE44

---
Qubbat as-Sakhra, The Dome Of The Rock, was built for caliph 'Abd al-Malik
in year 691, on the top of Moria moultain (in a place where ancient Jewish
Temple used to stand), a place where Abraham wanted to sacrifice Isaac, and
where angel appeared to punish David. According to Jewish tradition, this
rock is the center of the World. According to Moslem tradition, in this rock
there are impressed signs of Mahomet's and Elias feets and Gabriel's hand.
Another Moslem tradition says that in the Judgement Day Kaaba from Mecca will
come to it, Gabriel will stand on it to proclaim the Judgement, and the rock
will speak with human voice. In The Dome Moslems keep relique of the hair of
Mahomet's beard. Under the mosque, there is a cave where the Prophet was
sleaping before He was taken to the Heaven.
Shape and decorations of Qubbat as-Sakhra are masterpieces of Byzantine art
(as Umajjads supported Greek tradition in art). During Latin rules in city,
The Dome On The Rock was known as "Templum Domini".

Even earlier, a merge of military and administrative organisation appeared,
first over the boarders, and later in exarchates of Rome and Africa. It is
not sure when was this system introduced to Asia Minor. Some claim it was
done by Heraclius, some that it were the next emperors. Asia Minor was divided
into four separate military forces, known as themes. First one was the ex-personal
army of the emperor, which known, from now on as Opsikion (from latin obsequium),
guarded NW Asia Minor. Another theme was created in eastern Asia Minor, generally
behind Halys/Kizilirmak river, and was known as Armeniakon. Another one was created,
I think, of earlier Donau fleet on southern coast Asia Minor and Aegean islands.
It was known as Karabisianon from the main base of the fleet. The last of the first,
big, themes was Anatolikon (from greek name for "east"), between Opsikion and Karabisianon,
in central and central-western Asia Minor. Later, themes were also being created in Europe,
and existing themes in Asia, as willing to interfere in matters of the empire, were divided
into smaller ones. The organisation looked about like that; military settlers, known as stratiots,
were given hereditary land posessions, thanks to which they could afford military equipement and were
supposed, they and their heir, to fight in the army. Leaders of themes were known as strategs.

Aelia Capitolina. Over the Grave Romans built forum. After edict
of Mediolanum, Christians came back to Jerusalem, and after synod of
Nicea, empress Helena and bishop Macarius built a magnificent Church
Of Resurrection (333) there. This temple was destroyed with 1000 others
by Chosroes II in year 614. Although it was restaurated by emperor
Heraclius, it never retrieved all of its former beauty. In year 638,
caliph Omar entered Jerusalem and prayed in front of basilica (Patriarch
Sofronius invited him inside, but He rejected, afraid that his fellows
would want then to change it into mosque). In X and century, Byzantine
Empires, regained strengh and even reached Jerusalem. Caliph Hakim,
afraid of Christian betrayal, destroyed all churches in Jerusalem,
including this one. After his death, emperor Constantine Monomach
restored it. But, half-century later, Seldjuk Turks have captured

According to the legend of saint Abgar, Edessa was the first community, which adapted
Christianity - when Jesus was still alive. Its king was supposed to correspond with Jesus and
invite Him to the city. He was not to come, but the king received a miraculous image of Christ,
Mandilion. During the later wars, it was moved to Constantinople and disappeared during the
fourth crusade. The image of Turin may be the same one. Also, Edessa was a place where an important
theological school was located until it was forced out of Roman Empire. According to the legend,
Jesus himself was to bless the city and promess it will never be taken by infidels. But it was,
several times. By Persians and later by Muslims, who kept it until the reign of Macedonian dinasty
and Byzantine reconquista. After Mantzikert battle, it was taken by Seldjuks, but got independent
under Byzantine official Toros, an Armenian, was inherited by crusaders, and formed a rare example
of cooperation of local Christians and their latin rulers. But it was the first capital lost by
crusaders, and remained in Muslim hands since. After the massacres of Armenians and Syrians in the
beginning of XX century, no Christians were left in Edessa. Today it is a Turkish city, Urfa, named
"Sanli", fameous, for its behaviour during Turkish war of independance (or whatever I may call that)

Borned in Arabissos, Cilicia, was of Cappadocian roots. After his victories in war against Persia
in 70's of VI century, he became caesar (582) and married emperor's daughter. In the same year
He became co-regent and after emperor's death, the only ruler. His serie of campaigns against
Persia ended with his intervention in its civil war and making Chosroes the shah (591). The peace
allowed him moving military effort to the west, where He pushed Slavs behind Donau and assured
safety of Iberian posessions. Also, it was Him who established exarchates in Africa and Italy,
and is said to have written a book about Roman army and the barbarians it fought at this time.
On the other hand, He persecuted Armenians, and another legend accuses Him of planning "the final
sollution to their problem" and indeed, He moved some of them to Macedonia. Also, angry at pope
Gregory's politics towards Longobards, He allowed patriarch of C-ple to bear the title of "Ecomunical
patriarch". This antagonised two parts of the church even more. Also, his decisions of harshing the
tax regime gained him no sympathy. The same, Mauritius rejected soldiers' demand to buy back their
fellows captured by enemies. Centurion Focas of their delegation, who misbehaved, was slapped in
emperor's presence. Why is it so important, You'll get to know.

History of this place reflects history of entire Syria.About 3000 years ago
it was a place of cult of Syrian god of storm, Hadad. After Roman conquest,
in I century before Christ, the old building was turned into a temple dedicated
o Jupiter. In IV century, emperor Theodosius built there basilica of
St.John (his head, as head of prophet Yahya, is kept in this mosque as its
greatest relique). After Arabian conquest, basilica was annexed by Muslims,
and in year 705 caliph Al-Walid transformed it into the first miracle of
Muslem world, the great mosque of Damascus, thanks to the help of Byzantine
emperor, who gave Al-Walid artisants needed to install Byzantine mosaics in
the mosque. This magnificent building, full of Christian remains, became
a model for mosques all over the (Muslim) world. Old towers of Christian
basilica were the first minarets, and the highest of them is called Isa

@;Monotheletism
@PEDIAIMPROVE66
One extra happy citizen in each city.
---
Monotheletism was a doctrine by patriarch of Constantinople, Sergios,
accepted by patriarchs of Rome and Alexandria, which, by accenting the
one will of Christ and ignoring the question of his nature, was supposed
to end the internal Christian struggle between official catholic/orthodox
and nestorian duophysitism with monophysitism of churches of Syria, Egypt,
Nubia, Aethiopia, Assyria, Armenia, Georgia and Caucasian Albania. It was
not the first attempt, but the question proved to be important after the
last war against Persia during which Syrians and Egyptians, persecuted by
Byzantine administration, defended not the Empire. The attempt yielded no
results, though, as monophysites didn't oppose Muslim armies as well, and
opposition against new doctrine was strong amid both the orthodox and the
monophysites; eventually, the Empire resigned of the doctrine, but it survived
on the lands lost to the Muslims, in the mountains of Lebanon, where the
Maronite church formed.

@title=Civilization: Governments
The form of government you choose for your civilization will
affect the way resources are distributed in your cities, the
rate at which your citizens can produce and sustain new units
and city improvements, and the extent to which your citizens
have a say in the way you govern them.
^
Some forms of government, such as Despotism, Monarchy, and
later Communism and Fundamentalism, allow you to expand
rapidly, to produce and sustain large numbers of military
units, and to control your affairs completely.
^
Democracy and the Republic, on the other hand, give your
citizens the freedom to produce vast amounts of trade, which
increases your wealth and knowledge rapidly. On the other
hand, your citizens may grow unhappy when you send military
units out of your cities; also, your Senate may try to
interfere in your conduct of foreign affairs.
^
To change your civilization's government, you must have a
Revolution--select "Revolution" from the Kingdom Menu. This
will entail a brief period of Anarchy.

@PEDIAGOVT0
@width=600
@title=Civilization Government: Anarchy
Anarchy represents not so much a government type as the
lack of any stable government. Anarchy occurs when your
civilization's government falls, or when you decide to
have a Revolution. After a few turns of Anarchy, you will
be able to reconstitute your government.
^
Anarchy is similar to Despotism, except that the corruption
rate is VERY HIGH (see entry for Despotism). However, no
taxes are collected during a period of Anarchy, and no
scientific research is conducted.

^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit above the city size costs one shield per turn.
Settlers eat one food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Up to three military units in each city will institute
"martial law", converting an unhappy citizen into a content

^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Despotism has a HIGH rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Despotism, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 60%%. ALSO, ANY SQUARE WHICH WOULD ORDINARILY
PRODUCE THREE OR MORE OF A RESOURCE (FOOD, SHIELDS, TRADE) PRODUCES
ONE LESS.
^

always an inferior form of government. Try to switch to a
Monarchy as soon as possible.

^UNIT SUPPORT
Can support up to TEN units for free; additional
units cost one shield each. Settlers eat one
food per turn. ONLY Fundamentalisms may produce
FANATIC units.
^
^HAPPINESS
Under Fundamentalism, NO CITIZEN IS EVER UNHAPPY!
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Fundamentalism has a LOW rate of corruption.
However, Fundamentalism has the special disadvantage that
all SCIENCE is HALVED.
^
^SPECIAL
Improvements which convert unhappy citizens to
content citizens (Temples, etc.)
produce "tithes" equal to the number of citizens they would
otherwise convert. They also require no maintenance.
The diplomatic penalties for "terrorist acts" committed by
your Diplomats and Spies are reduced.
Under Fundamentalism, none of the science/tax/luxury rates may
be set higher than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Fundamentalism eliminates all happiness problems and provides
an excellent revenue. Scientific research tends to languish.

@title=Civilization Government: Republic
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit costs one shield per turn. Settlers eat TWO
food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Each military unit AFTER THE FIRST which is not in a friendly
city (or a fortress within 3 spaces of a friendly city)
causes one citizen in its home city to become unhappy.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
The Republic has a LOW rate of corruption and waste. The
level of corruption in a particular city is based on its
distance from your capital.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Republic, each square which ordinarily produces at
least one unit of trade produces an extra unit.
None of the science/tax/luxury rates may be set higher
than 80%%.
^
^HINTS
Switching to a Republic can give an astounding boost to your
science and tax revenues, although you'll probably have to
divert some of your trade to luxuries. It becomes more
difficult (and expensive) to keep an army in the field, but
building the Womens Suffrage wonder can help with this
problem.

@title=Civilization Government: Democracy
^UNIT SUPPORT
Each unit costs one shield per turn. Settlers eat TWO
food per turn.
^
^HAPPINESS
Each unit which is not in a friendly
city (or a fortress within 3 spaces of a friendly city)
causes TWO citizens in its home city to become unhappy.
^
^CORRUPTION AND WASTE
Democracies experience NO corruption or waste.
^
^SPECIAL
Under a Democracy, each square which ordinarily produces at
least one unit of trade produces an extra unit.
The units and cities of a Democracy are immune to BRIBERY
of all forms.
The science/tax/luxury rates may be set to any level
desired.
^
^HINTS
Democracies can produce spectacular amounts of revenue and
scientific research. However, because of the severe
happiness restrictions on military units, this form of
government tends to be viable only for large, advanced
civilizations. Increasing your luxuries rate and building
Wonders can help alleviate this problem.
