It's September of 1942, the German War machine has had yet another
successful summer of campaigning in the Soviet Union. Fall Blau has
met with mediocre success though, as it has failed to take the oil rich
Caucusus Mountains and also failed to sweep to the east of Stalingrad
and encircle the city. An attack at Stalingrad now would isolate any
Soviet units to the South, as well as cut off the Volga River as a
shipping lane. Rather than pressing on to Maikop and Gronzy, Hitler
instead decides to send you, Generaloberst Freidrich Paulus and
your 6th Army straight into the cauldron itself...
%
Meanwhile, Stalin has issued order #227 stating "Not a step back"
and the Soviet 62nd Army under General Lopatin have entrenched
themselves throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs, planning to
end their fighting retreat at the banks of the Volga. The Luftwafe just hit
Stalingrad with a 1,000 bomber raid yesterday, resulting in the
destruction of several buildings and turning entire sections of the city into
smoldering rubble. Suitable terrain for guerilla defense tactics indeed...
%
Beyong the city of Stalingrad lies the endless Asian Steepe. A victory
here would secure Army Group South's position, and allow for a
consolidated strike at the Caucusus Oil Fields. Then, perhaps an
invasion of Iran with the hopes of linking up first with DAK forces
currently fighting in Afrika, and possibly with the Japanese as they
push through India.
%
It is now a race against the seasons as another winter approaches.
Can Germany wrestle Stalin's city away from the Soviet Army before
their inevitable winter counter-offensive can begin? The stage is set for
a battle that will decide the fate of things to come on the Ost Front.
Your kampfgruppen are in position awaiting your orders to advance
on the outskirts of Stalingrad. Good luck, Herr Paulus...
