On 28 June 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed with Germany.
The Germans had not been allowed to send any delegates, and had to
accept whatever was decided. The Treaty had five main points:
%
Germany had to accept the blame for starting the war.
%
Germanys military power was reduced. Germany was not allowed to have
submarines or an air force. It could have an army of only 100,000 men
and a navy of only 6 ships, and it was not allowed to place any troops
in the Rhineland.
%
Germany had to pay 6,600 million reparations for damage done.
%
Germany lost 10% of its land, 12% of its population, 16% of its
coalfields and half its iron and steel industry. The Saar coalfield
was given to France for 15 years, and Alsace-Lorraine given back to
France. Danzig became a free city, and Poland was given a corridor
to the Baltic Sea. Germany was not allowed to unite with Austria.
Finally, Germanys colonies in Africa, China and the Pacific were
given to France, Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Japanese Empire
as mandates of the League of Nations.
%

Between 1918 and 1933 Adold Hitler rose to become the all powerful
Fuhrer, dictator of all Germany. Rearmament in Germany helped reduce
unemployment and helped Hitler in his long-term objective to make
Germany strong once again. He rearmed secretly at first, and then
said he did it only becuase other countries refused to rearm.
%
In 1934 the League of Nations Disarmament Conference had broken down.
Hitler also knew that Britain thought the Treaty was too harsh and Germany
was unable to defend itself. Britain also thought Germany would be a
useful buffer towards Communism.
%
In 1935 Britain signed the Anglo-German naval pact to allow the
German navy to increase to 35% the size of the British.
%
In March 1936, Hitler marched troops into the Rhineland. This
was against the treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Treaty of 1925.
%
In 1937 he tried Germany's new weapons (Legion Condor)in the Spanish
civil war, in 1938 he took over Austria and the Sudetenland area of
Czechoslovakia. Finally in 1939 he invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia
and invaded Poland together with the Soviets (Hitler-Stalin-Pact).
%
Resistance against the regime was threatened by the Gestapo.
