^Rising from an agrarian feudal state divided viciously into itself to an industrial power 
^with a modern army and navy in just 40 years from Commodore Matthew C Perry's 'visit' to
^Tokyo Harbor, Japan quickly grew in power and ambition. Controlling the Mariana, Marshall,
^and Caroline Islands, the Shantung Peninsula, Korea, and Manchuria by 1931, Japan's ambitions
^seemed limitless. In 1937, Japan made an all-out assault on China, easily capturing its
^Eastern third in just a few years. On September 1, 1939, most historians mark the beginning
^of the Second World War, when Nazi German Dictator Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. However,
^given Japanese success in the Pacific, US President Franklin D Roosevelt and British Prime
^Minister Sir Winston S Churchill became concerned by this growing power. When France 
^capitulated to Germany in June, 1940, the authorities in its colonies of French Indochina
^and French Polynesia effectively surrendered into Japanese puppet states. Churchill and
^Roosevelt braced for Japanese aggression against their Asian and Pacific holdings, while
^the Dutch East Indies, under the de facto administration of Vice-Admiral Conrad Helfrich
^since the Netherlands was under German occupation, prepared for an invasion. Things looked
^bleak when Thai Prime Minister Phibun Songgram vocally sided with Japan, his naked desire
^for Burma and Malaya being well known. Roosevelt figured an oil embargo on Japan, and a 
^freezing of all Japanese funds in American banks might be a good way to 'chasten' the 
^growing threat of the Empire of the Rising Sun...
