I don't think there is anything wrong with an immediate edit on a crosspost. It is posts that show as edited that are clearly against the rules.
Perhaps if that is not what the group feels a note concerning this could be added to the rules following a vote. That would be better than throwing accusations of 'poor form' around when as Sparrow suggests, it isn't entirely clear at all.

Well the difference is crossposts 5 minutes apart don't happen.
Maybe people will see it your way. Removing myself, Joncha and Jaguar for obvious reasons, we have 1 who does (you) and Sparrow, whose immediate reaction was that the immediate edit was fine in the circumstances.
Worth a vote I'd say, before casting aspersions. This is particularly true at a time when the game could still easily get shut down or moved.

I've never seen anyone defend edits before this, spike. Of any sort. Every time a crosspost in the past has happened, either no edit took place, or the offending party was told not to edit next time. It doesn't change things for it to be you.
I'm not casting aspersions, either - simply stating what I see as fact. Not as a 'rule change', but what I see as clearly part of the rules already.
Rule 5. Guesses cannot be changed after being posted.
It does not say anything about crossposts. It does not say 'unless someone else guessed what you already guessed'. It simply says they cannot be changed.

I know you weren't casting aspersions. I do think though that if that is your take it should be explicit in the rules. Both myself and Sparrow's immediate reaction was immediate edits because of a crosspost are fine. Clearly they are different from an later edit after you have seen future guesses/information. If you think the rule should apply to both, fair enough. But I don't think it's unreasonable to raise the question.
I think I can even remember times when people have suggested after a flurry that they edited because of a crosspost, or posted their guess with a to indicate this. No one complained then.

Spike's word guess was valid, and pretty good in the scheme of things. No additional letter guess would have been valid, but word guesses are always valid under the current rules. (Rule guesses containing letters that haven't already been guessed and marked invalid, anyway.)

I was online when the update came. I saw it and started thinking about what letter would fit the misupdate. If he had updated properly, I would have guessed the word immediately. He didn't.
If Jaguar had pointed out his mistake before Paddy's guess, that would have been different, I suppose.

I'd be more clear on what's a guess and what's not, perhaps with "this is not a guess" I'd probably have counted your capitalized word as a guess... 'suggesting' words is in the scheme of things not something to be taken account of - you shouldn't really do it anyway, just guess the word if you believe in it - so, to me, anything that looks like a guess, is.

I think in the past we've consistently interpreted that rule to indicate that any two updates (including the update for your letter guess) validate your letter guess.

It's actually pretty simple. But OK, perhaps it's best to lurk for a while and then join.
Bolding is better, but not a rule; if you are making an obvious guess, then it is a guess. Any post that is only a word is by definition a guess.

The current rule has nothing to do with the word being plural or not. We have already had words disallowed on this point.

Okay. But I remember some discussion on this subject aons ago, and then I understood the consensus as not allowing plural words. That might have been me misunderstanding or just remembering wrong though. Or could it be that the rule is poorly worded? Anyway, we're just an update from knowing, and potentially get a new and interesting rule discussion then.

No, the fix was intentional, because other verb forms (you walk, he walks) were seen as being equivalent to 5-letter plurals.

On the basis that I can't be bothered going back to read the rules, and that all you guys are much more experienced at this game than I am.....would someone please tell me whether the correct guesser was:

Let's not introduce new rules, particularly rules that would limit the number of valid words or rules that are impossible to enforce. Any rule added to the game equals to a degree of fun subtracted from it.
As I'm dyslexic, I check every word I post on dictionary.com for spelling. I don't think I've ever been trawling, but I'm definatly not going to stop using the dictionary for my words.
Guessing OTOH, I wouldn't use the dictionary. That just seems wrong to me.

Yes, what you describe is very different from trawling, IMO.
Trawling is having no clue what the word is, and just flipping through the dictionary until you find one that fits. There's no way we can prevent someone from doing it, but I think it should be actively discouraged.

I can't see that dictionaries can help much for guessing, at least as long as you don't have the first letter(s)? As for wordsetting, the very few times I've been the setter, I've thought of a word in Norwegian and found the English word for it, although also searched for better words during the process. The last word for example, I found by misspelling a word and getting alternatives of what I meant, and then I found the reference inside the page that came up when I picked one of those words. But I take it you mean word guesses here, right?

Actually, no. Check dictionary.com, which i did after guessing it. It's listed in lower-case as well as upper case (and specifically deviated between the two).

I only made the guess, I didn't set the word I'm sort of up in the air as to whether it aught to be a nonproper noun or not ... "black" is sometimes uncapitalized also, as is "white", which are not particularly different in usage (and i mean when used to describe race) in the modern day, but i'm not sure if that's just a mistake being propogated into the modern lingua franca or not.
