^
^It is the end of 1979, and an uncertain fate hangs over the world as the Cold War deepens. In this Atomic
^Age world of international tension, you may play one of seven factions (though there's effectively eight):
^the Warsaw Pact, the bastion of Communism, controls that alliance as well as Soviet-dominated Afghanistan;
^NATO and Allies controls NATO itself (as well as American and British dependencies and bases around the
^world) and their close allies Israel, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand; the Pro-Soviet States
^are Communist or quasi-Communist states allied to the USSR, namely Cuba, Nicaragua, Benin, Angola, Ethiopia,
^Syria, North Yemen, Vietnam, and North Korea; the Pro-Western States are Third World nations who support
^the Western Powers, namely Guatamala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Chile, Liberia, South Africa, Egypt, Saudi
^Arabia and the Gulf States, Pakistan, Taiwan, and the Philippines; the Chinese and Allies (Cambodia, Burma,
^Iraq, Mongolia, and Yugoslavia) are Communist or quasi-Communist states not allied with the USSR; the Iranians
^are just the Islamic fundamentalist regime of Iran, standing alone due to its unique stance; the Volatiles and
^Insurgents (replacement for the Barbarians) are nations in civil disorder or unrest (namely Algeria, Mozambique,
^Sri Lanka, and Venezuela), the untenable, xenophobic regime of Libya, the contested Ethiopian province of Eritrea,
^and various insurgent groups that spring up by the Events text (namely the Mujehidin, Intefadeh, TPLF, ANC, UNITA,
^and Contras); the Non-Aligned States are all other countries, but are woefully low tech and in debt. Do not play
^the Non-Aligned States, as they were not meant to be a player civ (you cannot play the Volatiles and Insurgents),
^though you may try your hand at any of the others. Good Luck!
