Large Mars Map

By corvi #6

This map is based mostly on Corvi #6s' interest in, and research about, Mars. The positioning
of the Oceanus Borealis (the huge ocean covering a large part of the northern hemisphere)
was taken from Kim Stanley Robinsons' excellant Mars trilogy, and particularly from the final
book in the series, 'Blue Mars'.

The map is as large as it was possible to make it, and it's design, ie, a single continous
landmass, makes it an extremely challenging map to play on. Try it on Deity and marvel at how
powerful the AI civs become :)

The map is not particularly faithful to true life, as many conncessions had to be made in the
interests of playability. All the same, the major features of Mars are present, and include such
delights as;
Valles Marineris- a titanic canyon system 100 times the size of the Grand Canton on the earth. On
this map, it has become flooded, forming a long, narrow inland sea.
Tharsis Montes- the Tharsis bulge is a region of extinct vulcanism, characterised by its gigantic
extinct volcanoes, the summits of which are represented by glacier. In order, from top right to
bottom left, the three major peaks are Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons and Arsia Mons.
Olympus Mons- lying to the North-West of Tharsis, Olympus Mons is the largest mountain in the
entier Solar system.
Hellas Planitia/ Hellas Sea- Hellas Planitia is a vast impact crater on Mars' southern hemisphere,
but on this map it shown flooded as Hellas Sea.
Argyre Planitia/ Argyre Sea- a smaller version of Hellas, and treated in the same manner for the
purposes of this map. It lies south of Valles Marineris.
