^Determined to strike a massive blow like a "battering ram" 
to knock Germany from the war, the British and French launch 
a combined offensive just east of Amiens along a river known 
as the Somme.

^The battle of the Somme has two objectives for the allies. 
Joffre, the commander of the French army, seeks to force the 
Germans to wind down their operations around Verdun. Haig, 
the commander of the BEF, is spoiling for a battle that would 
break the German Army and make his career.
