^Hoping to drive the Germans from the Belgian coastal ports, which are incorrectly 
believed to be staging areas for U-Boat attacks on British shipping, the British 
launch the Third Ypres offensive. The local objective of this offensive is a small 
town a mere eight kilometers behind the German lines: the village of Passchendaele.

^The weather is not with the British, however, for after over a week of bombarding 
the German positions, the British have done little more than turn no man's land into 
a substance that observers at the front liken to "porridge" or "cream cheese."
