^Having witnessed the nearly suicidal French efforts to retake 
virtually worthless land in 1915, the chief of the German General 
Staff, Erich von Falkenhayn, comes to a terrifying conclusion. If 
the French will throw themselves with suicidal vigor against German 
defenses to retake worthless pieces of land, what lengths will they 
attempt to retake something truly important?
^
^Armed with this conclusion and resolved to bleed the French Army 
white, von Falkenhayn launches the first major German offensive since 
1914. He directs it against a salient in the front near the fortress 
city of Verdun. In all of history, France has never won a war in which 
Verdun was lost to enemy hands.
^
^For the first time, the Germans unleash terrifying new tactics upon 
the French. Their attacks are preceded by intense bombardments with 
super-heavy guns firing high explosive and gas shells. Across no man's 
land, the Germans advance using the infiltration, firepower, and assault 
tactics tested earlier in the Argonne and the Vosges. The assault troops 
make their first appearance.
