^Abu Sayyaf, whose name means "Bearer of the Sword" is a group
of Al Qaeda-linked Muslim extremists fighting for an independent
Islamic state in the southern Philippines island of Mindanao.
Some ASG leaders have studied or worked in the Middle
East and allegedly
fought in Afghanistan during the Soviet war. The group
split from the Moro
National Liberation Front in the early 1990s under
the leadership of
Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani, who was killed in a
clash with Philippine
police on 18 December 1998. His younger brother,
Khadaffy Janjalani, has replaced
him as the nominal leader of the group, which is composed of several
semi-autonomous factions.
The Philippines is considered the "second front" in the US led war
on terrorism,and since early February 2002, 1300 U.S. soldiers
have been training Philippine
troops in marksmanship, small-unit leadership,
special operations, intelligence, communications and
survival techniques for use in the fight a
gainst Abu Sayyaf.
Since then, the Philippine government,
led by President Gloria Arroyo,
has vowed an all-out effort to crush Abu Sayyaf.
