The Ösel Treaty This Treaty ends the War which has haunted the Lands of Polish- Lituanian Livonia. This War was an unfortunate Effect of a series of bad Judgements taken by Officers on both sides of the Border, ultimately leading to this costly War in which the Swedish Army advanced south, and where the same Army laid Siege to the Baltic Port of Riga. The Polish army fought valiantly, until it was confined in the fortified City of Riga, and even then it made several break- outs, one ultimatly ending in the total Destruction of the Village of Ermes. This Treaty is an Effect of the Negotiations taking place on the small Island of Ösel, after it had become clear that the long and costly Siege of Riga only would be of Gain to the Enemies of Sweden and the Rzeczpospolita, as the Outcome of this Siege would be highly uncertain, yet undoubtedly very costly for both Parties. The two Nations signatory to this Treaty, the Kingdom of Sweden and the Rzeczpospolita of Poland-Lithuania, hereby binds them- selves to these Terms: ¤1 The Kingdom of Sweden will starting in December 1619, pay to the Rzeczpospolita of Poland-Lithuania a Sum of Satisfaction, every second Month for 36 Months, a Sum of 25 000 Riechstaller, the total Sum to be paid out this Way will be 900 000 Reichstaller. ¤2 All of Polish Livonia as well as the City of Riga is to be turned over to the Swedish Army, no harm in any Way shall be done to the Burghers of Riga or the City itself by either Army. ¤3 His Majesty Sigismund III, by the Grace of the Lord High King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Duke of the Ukraine, also Lord of Courland, of the Rzeczpospolita of Poland-Lituania hereby re- nounce all of His Claims to to the Throne of Sweden. His Majesty Sigismund III also recognices his Royal Cousin, Gustavus II Adolphus, Supreme King and Archduke of Swethens, Goths and Vandals, Grand Duke of Finland, Duke of Estonia and Vestmanland, as the rightfull Heir to the Swedish Throne. ¤4 Sweden and her protestant Allies also hereby terminate all hostile Operations in Territory belonging to the Rzeczpospolita of Poland- Lithuania and her Vassals. Signed: Gustavus II Adolphus, Supreme King and archduke of Swethens, Goths and Vandals, Grand duke of Finland, duke of Estonia, and Vestmanland Signed: Sigismundus III, High King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Duke of the Ukraine, likewise Lord and Master of Courland
