Splitter 3.1
************

Short description
*****************
You want to save your data to a floppy disk, but the file is too large ?
With Splitter you can split the data in parts of 1.44 MB or other sizes.
Because Splitter is extremely small (58KB), you can deliver it easily with the
first disk for unsplitting.

* Splitter splits files and directories (including subdirectories).
* You can select any size of parts you like.
* You can drag a file or directory from the windows explorer.
* Splitter is able to handle very large parts.
* The date of the original files will be restored.
* The parts can be read directly from diskette/CD.
* Splitter is backward compatible to the first version.
* Splitter automatically switches between English and German and French.

What's new in this version
**************************
* Correction of a bug, which caused an error by unsplitting. This error
occured only by single splitted files larger than 2147483647 Bytes (2GB).

Operating instructions
**********************
Splitting:
* For splitting, select the file/directory you want to split. Unless an
output directory is set already, Splitter suggests automatically a suitable
  one.
* If you want, you can select now an output directory by yourself, though
it's not possible to write directly to a removable drive (diskette/CD).
* Finally select the size of parts you want to create and press <Split>.
Splitter will generate the parts, the original data never will be touched.
You can stop the task by pressing the <ESC> key.
* For easier delivering, Splitter itself will be copied to the output
  directory.

Unsplit:
* To unsplit the parts, select one of the parts. Unless an output directory
is set already, Splitter suggests automatically a suitable one. The parts
can be read directly from diskette/CD.
* If you want, you can select now an output directory as well, though it's
not possible to write directly to a removable drive (diskette/CD).
* Press <Unsplit>, it's not necessary to set the size of the parts. Splitter
generates the original file(s) and directori(es).
You can stop the task by pressing the <ESC> key. If a part can't be found,
Splitter asks for the next diskette, or you can search for the file
  yourself.

Important note
**************
Problem:
Preformatted diskettes sometimes have damaged sectors. You are able to copy
the parts to the diskette without problems (you won't get a warning from the
operating system), but it's not possible to read back the parts. Normally
this problem doesn't appear in every day life, because the diskettes aren't
used in their full sizes.

What you can do:
To avoid this problem, check if you can read back the parts, or format the
diskettes by yourself (complete format). Formatting a diskette will exclude
damaged sectors from use, afterwards there is less space available on the
diskette.

You already have such diskettes:
You can try to repair the diskette with a disk-repair tool (e.g. ScanDisk
from windows). Splitter leaves some free space on the disk, so the repair
tool can move the damaged sectors.

Distribution
************
Splitter is freeware, you can make free copies, give it to friends or do
whatever you want to do with it. However, you are not allowed to redistribute
it in any modified form, or to sell splitter and earn money.
