I'd assume the website copy has a dropped word or more from the "real" version or transcript. Maybe it's a Bushism. On the scale of global relevance, it's got to be close to absolute zero, so no wonder the left wants to have another circle jerk over it.

They obviously were involuntarily taken here, quite a lot of them before it even was "America," but if you take garbled syntax aside, the statement does apply to former slaves such as Douglass, et al. Unless you want to argue we'd be better off following Lincoln's original idea of deporting 'em all somewhere else because they couldn't live in "white society as equals" (ol' Abe's quote to a delegation of black leaders, including Douglass, during a meeting at the White House to discuss the emancipation issue)

would america even exist if it wasnt for slavery? i mean would the colonies be profitable at all? it don't seem like South Carolina wouldve even been colonized if there was no slaves.

That's a good point, Albert. I'm not entirely sure if South Carolina or Georgia would really have been much more than little frontier towns with slavery. It's an interesting question of what the US would look like if there had been no slavery.

You mena no south!? It would have been great!Seriosuly, Slavery made more of an impact after the good ol' cotton gin: I think slavery was fundamental for states like Alabama and Mississippi to come about than some of the ones with higher elevations.

And obviously savery had an immense impact on the US: IIRC, slaves were the second biggest repository of wealth in the US after landed property in 1860.
