    Lightbulb Mongol Horde Succession Game

    There is only one rule:

    If it doesn't have four legs, wheels, tracks, floats or flies - it's not allowed.
    (Since when did a Mongol walk!)
    Only exception Settlers and Engineers are permitted

    That means NO Dips and NO Spies - Magically appearing Partisans must be disbanded as must any non-permitted mercenary units from huts

    All city improvements and WoWs are permitted - normal rules ie No rehoming of 'Vans, and on this occasion we will not impose our usual Spotless caveat

    We are on a Giga World - win by any means that seems appropriate at the time

    At 1AD - if there are enough of us - we may split into two games - one for conquest and one for the stars

    ================================================== =============================

    4000BC = The proud Mongols elect Bortei to be their first war chief and she takes the title Khan. The Mongols start with Bronze Working, Ceremonial Burial and Horsemanship. A hut is found at (209, 93). Hut reveals perfectly legitimate Non-Chariot!
    3950BC = Chariot sights next hut - Settlers head for 4 special sweet spot.
    3900BC = Hut reveals Mysticism - quite useful with expensive martial law!
    3800BC = Hut reveals Currency - on the way ...
    3750BC = the sweet spot is Fish, Desert Oil, Buffalo and hidden - seed is 8 - the smart money is on a Pheasant - not the most hopeful of science sites. Second Settler goes South in hope of finding a 'Whale Band'.
    3700BC = Hut gives Polytheism - our first tech towards Monarchy is going to cost a fortune! We're going to play Nomad for a while.
    3500BC = hidden now has road
    3400BC = Hut conceals illegal Archer - disbanded (sob);
    3150BC = Ching - hut yields 50g;
    3100BC = Cunning villagers teach us Masonry;
    3000BC = Smart money was wrong - hidden turns out to be Silk;
    2950BC = A Non-Elephant joins our ranks;
    2850BC = Karakorum founded - go for rush Settler;
    2750BC = Chariot tips hut and reveals Barb Horse on Forest - goes into red killing it - no vet!
    2650BC = Elephant finds Whale band sweet spots - a million miles from anywhere!
    2550BC = Karakorum rushes Settler;
    2500BC = Villagers give us the secret of Pottery
    2450BC = Samarkand founded
    2400BC = Bokhara discovered far to the North
    2350BC = Nishapur founded; Elephant unleashes Barb and becomes vet
    2100BC = Villagers teach us the art of Archery Warrior Code
    2050BC = Khan Bortei retires suffering from Piles (of useless tech)

    The grand plan is to complete the Temple in Karakorum and then switch to the Gardens - we need many more cities - hopefully in the North and West where there are plentiful whales - corruption will be awful but what must be must be - please sign up and play twenty turns ...

    Play Order

    1) SG[1] - 20 turns
    2) SG(2) - 20 turns
    3) STYOM - 20 turns
    4) sirsnuggles - 20 turns
    5) LaFayette
    6) SCG
    etc ...

    The SGs surprisingly sober

    2050: Looks at the allocation of workers, sees we are about 12 turns from Alphabet, sighs, presses enter.

    2000: Exploring... Whale/Buffalo/Peat site spotted E of Bokhara. Lots of good city sites near Bokhara; need cash to rush some Settlers there. We might even want to move the Palace up to that area, to (eventually)
    1950: Some semidecent city sites near our capital (Silk/Buffalo to the west, Fish/Buffalo to the north) will be targeted for settlement, soon. Yes, we would rather be building near the Whales - but the extra trade and shields from Whales would be lost to corruption at this stage of the game, anyway.
    1900: Exploring. Horsemen rushed in Bokhara to prevent disorder.
    1850: Bokhara hits size 2. Tried putting all workers in the water for trade, but all 4 arrows were lost to corruption
    1800: More exploring.
    1750: More exploring. Nishapur size 2, starts Settler.
    1700:
    1650:
    1600: Karakorum size 2, rush Temple. Science rate drops from 22 to 15 turns.
    1550: Temple in Karakorum. Start to build HG. Alphabet discovered; really no debate involved as we decide to research Code of Laws.
    1500: Science Minister says we're #1 still.
    1450: French start HG
    1400: Samarkand builds Settlers. With some debate, it is decided to Road the Buffalo near Karakorum and then add them to the city.
    1350: Exploring.
    1300: Exploring. Where are all the huts?
    1250: Settlers added to Karakorum (size 3) to speed Garden production.
    1200: Exploring
    1150: Exploring
    1100: Nomads at 201, 69.
    1050: 50 g at 207,71.
    1000: Egyptians start Pyramids.

    STYOM looks over the dustbowl of a map, shakes his head, and passes the torch of leadership.

    Well, the good news is... OK, the situation is thus: We're still a long way away from Monarchy (about 10 turns from CoL). We're in a wonder race for HG with a size 7 city (Paris), and our capital can't grow without Monarchy (or some serious work being done on the terrain). Lots of good city sites abound... this may become an ICS game, since there's lots of room to expand.

    I'd like to give this a shot. I'm a new member to the forum (I think this is my fourth or fifth post), so I'd need instructions on just what is expected. I'm a veteran player, been playin' since civ1 (1991), but I've got an unusual style. Perfectionist really. Tend to build up and modernize cities.

    other than following the rules set forth in the thread itself, and not using anything generally agreed upon as a cheat (ie reloading, caravan rehoming, looking at map in cheat mode, etc), just play and have fun

    and of course be prepared for robust constructive critisism (and don't take anything written here too seriously, its just a game )

    Okay, I'm still learning the civ2 vernacular, although I can guess at most of it: but what is "caravan rehoming"?

    Also, I assume that reloading means: saving a game, and when it goes bad, reloading a previous save? Or perhaps it means: no writing new events (like creating units) into an events file that require reloading.

    What does this mean:

    Oh, I get it. HG is hanging gardens.

    Okay. I'll take the .sav and go with it. I have to go to a wedding this afternoon, so I won't be able to have this finished until tomorrow morning or so. I suppose twenty turns is the standard.

    Building a caravan in a small city, moving it to a big, productive city and hitting the 'home to this city' option in the city view window, is not allowed.

    And, yes, don't mess with the save file - no reloading bad hut or battle outcomes, no modified rules files allowed, etc.

    Oh, and you need the Multiplayer Gold version of Civ as opposed to Classic (2.42) to load the savegame above.

    amazon.com will probably have it. What version do you have? Periodically, people play Test of Time, or Classic (2.42) succession games... but mainly it's MGE here.

    It's much more serious than that! I stay up late writing recommendations for the Institute.

    Thank you STYOM

    Play order updated - hope I didn't miss anyone - if I did shout loudly ...

    This could be tough - slow start, expensive martial law and grim terrain - dustbowl as STYOM so accurately states.

    975: Exploring
    950: Exploring
    925: Sleeping
    900: Advanced tribe encountered! Inhabitants assimilated into the Mongol horde. New city named Kashgar.
    875: Southeast Highway completed; linking the great cities Samarkand, Nishapur, and Karakorum.
    850: The capitol decides that a temporary food deficit worth moving production from fish to oil. Only –1 gold, but a +3 shield yield.
    825: The Khan codifies the first laws, consolidating the Mongol horde under one authority. She decides that, since the Mongol horde is confined within the limiting boundaries of an island, triremes are needed to press invasion upon the surrounding empires. The changing of production saved 31 (32-1) gold towards the erecting of a wonder.
    800: Continuing investigation of the Mongol hinterland. Excellent opportunities for expansion sighted in the Northeast. Whales!
    775: Historic oil pipeline constructed in the deserts near Karakorum.
    750: Settlers embark from Samarkand, since rapid fertility rates are expected, city planners seek to erect granaries to accommodate the baby boom. Rumors reach Mongolia that some foreign people will soon complete a glorious wonder. Yet, the vanity of the Khan seems to be reaching Colossal heights. Elephants burst into a village in the Northeast; submissive inhabitants offer new Construction techniques to appease the wrath of the Khan.
    725: It is said that fabled Paris builds Flower Pots that hang in the sky? The Khan’s supercilious appetite has nearly starved the capital. At long last she permits fishing to recommence. She scoffs at the idea of gardens hanging in the skies, and declares in a rather surly manner, “Surely they are too close to the sun and shall be burned.” She seems intent upon honoring herself.
    700: Ever exploring, seeking new undiscovered lands.
    675: Rheims becomes Philosophical hub. Bokhara seeks to settle the surrounding countryside.
    650: What to do?
    625: Nishapur builds second settler unit destined to build new colony at 185,87--near wheatlands. Perhaps Nishapur will take advantage of the growth lull to build a Temple. Coastal city of Tabriz founded, it’s primary resources located in a nearby wheat field that already contain road and irrigation! --Apparently the benefits of foresight. Tabriz seeks to setup defensive perimeter.
    600: Revenue now reaches 5 g/t. Science each 19t.
    575: The current Demographics Yearbook (f11) reports that the Mongol nation is the most productive at 55. It is said that the Carthaginian ruler also seeks to glorify himself with a Colossal achievement. Who shall reach this goal first?!
    550: Rumors circulate that the Celtic peoples begin building Great Tombs to honor their dead rulers. How strange.
    525: Dual irrigation projects commence near the fertile plains of Samarkand.
    500: Persians seem to be attempting to stockpile Books of Learning.

    The Empire still flounders in mediocrity, yet organization gradually nears. Highways exist in the Southeast, and the beginnings of a highway that shall link the southeast to the projected city (in the southcentral) site of 185,87 are being laid. Soon communications between the western cities of Bokhara and Kashgar shall be streamlined by yet another highway. Tabriz grows at breathtaking speed. The Samarkand irrigation projects shall one day lead to its rapid rise to greatness. The Khan is only moments away from completing a great Monument to herself that should attract merchants from across the worlds, perhaps even from France. And to the north, our explorers report the island may not really be an island, but that it seems to extend further north and east, yet only further investigation shall reveal the truth of the matter. The great problem that exists for the next ruler, is that Karakorum lacks sustenance. How shall it eat?

    General strategy conference notes for LaFayette: Well, if you can curtail Khan Bortei from her extravagant lifestyle, perhaps you can persuade her into building an Oracle. To solve both food and production problems for Karakorum: build irrigation ditches all the way from the ocean nearby Nishapur to the buffalo of K. Also, try building irrigation near the lake of Karakorum (will give an extra shield over the fish). Don't worry, Monarchy will soon be coming after map making. Monarchy didn't appear as a choice, so I had to go with map making instead.

    Temples needed in each of the cities. Well, those were my long term goals. Couldn't get there in time...

    Sounds like good turns, sirsnuggles Too bad about the French getting the Gardens... but I don't know how we could have beaten them, with the production level we had.

    If you look in the Apolyton FAQ there should be a table which explains how long you're a Settler for (first 30 posts, IIRC). It also explains a lot of the forum rules if you're interested (no spamming to get those first 30 posts ).

    Yeah, I would've moved production to the desert oil earlier, but I didn't have any food reserve to cover the shortage. I could've canabalized all of our units but that would have left us defenseless and led to an even worse fate. I usually have bad luck when I do that sort of thing.

    Yeah, Mike's will have to become our saving grace...I don't know that the Oracle is worth it, we can probably survive without it. We'll just need 3 units garrisoned in each city for a while.

    We really can't compete with Paris right now (not enough irrigation yet). It is a size 8, our little Karakorum is only size 3. But that makes sense really, Mongols don't really like settling down...their kinda nomadic...into building (or capturing) new cities.

    I hope you guys like the organization I tried bringing. The real Mongol empire collapsed because they couldn't control such a large space with the network they developed, hopefully the same will not happen to us!

    The SGs surprisingly sober
    Keep sober, please!
    I'm not sure I have completely understood the rule:
    4 legs = I understand
    4 wheels = I understand
    4 tracks = ?
    4 floats = ?
    4 flies = ?

    Sick

    La Fayette ... the ordinary "human" units are NOT allowed. Like Warriors, Archers, Musketeers etc.

    (Settlers/Engineers are OK)

    Tracks was a reference to Armour, Flies to Aircraft and Floats to Boats ... these units are allowed

    BTW La Fayette. I think I might be building a phalanx in one of the cities.

    Please remedy that error. Thanx.

    This is what I had guessed (but the way it was written I haven't been taught at school, that's why I asked: just to make sure; thanks)

    The rain in Spain is falling in the plain

    La Fayette comes to power, looks at the Empire and almost starts crying:
    500BC, we have 12 techs and haven't even started researching MONARCHY
    Plains, lots of plains are to be seen around us, but this is not Spain, the rain isn't falling and our glorious cities are STARVING
    All the predecessors who neglected researching techs along the path to Monarchy should be sent to THE INSTITUTE

    Well, LF knows what remains to be done: finish Colossus ASAP to increase research 'speed', and try to grow Samarkand to size 5 in order to start Xinning.

    Main events:
    400BC: Our brave ellie tips a hut full of bloodthirsty barbs and dies
    350BC : Our coneheads (a very, very tiny cone indeed) discover Map Making and start researching MONARCHY
    25BC: Monarchy discovered and established

    Lf is tired and retires
