  • Found a way around my dilemna

Yep... been trying to play a completely peaceful game but something evil inside me is finding it very very very difficult to refrain from attacking my neighbors. But I've come so far that I really don't want to blow it now.

SO, I've decided to start a second game this weekend where I will play the complete opposite of builders - I will build 3-5 cities and conquer the rest (gonna use despot and communism govts to keep them all under control too) . I'm thinking the Celts would be the best for this... but I'm going to play on a large temperate 5B continent with random opponents (exact same stats as the builder game I'm playing) so perhaps I should play one with a later UU in case I don't find anyone to kill before they're obsolete? Hmmm... any suggestions on a nation that will provide a good kicking to everyone who dares share my large landmass?
If pigs could fly we'd all have to wear helmets.

It's always tough to play "completely" peaceful or "completely' warring. The game is designed for a mixed strategy.

Your question, as you posed it, is likely to bring up a "my favorite UU" thread if it gets too many replies. The Celts seem like a good idea by your suggestion (read a recent GOTM on civfanatics for a good suggestion of what they can do). If you want to wait for a civ who has its UU later in the game, maybe you'd want to play as a civ whose UU replaces the cavalry.

Continents balance the UUs better than other settings. Pangea land mass favors UUs that have increased movement (Celts, Zulu, Aztec, Iroquois), where archipeligo favors UUs with increased attack but not movement (Persia, and especially Scandanavia, with its early marine ability and whopping 6 attack!).

It all depends on your game settings and preferences.

I would have argued a bit about the completely war game, but since I got into Au208 I have seen the light. All war all the time is harder that all peace.

I'm currently playing a dandy warmongering game as the Celts on pangaea. Normal size map, regent, random civs. Strangely enough, Egypt and I have wiped out all the other civs and it's just good old Cleo and me left. We've been peaceful for too long now and I'm about to invade her with three transports full of modern armour and 3 mech infantry. My thought is, rather than go in and take over cities, to sail along the coastline, attack a coastal city, raze it, and get back on the transports and move to the next city and do the same thing all over again. I have the transports covered with a carrier with 4 jet fighters assigned to air superiority to protect from Cleo's bombers. This is the first time I will have tried this but I figure it should work. I'm tired of all my seaborne vessels being bombed to within an inch of their lives and then some dinky ironclad comes along and knocks them off. Invasion is planned for this afternoon. Elsewhere I have stealth bombers ready to offer up major destruction and a host of modern armour ready to blast through the one choke point that separates us. I control the choke point.

Dont forget to throw in a battleship or two in defense of your carrier. Nothing is worse than being ambushed by a few subs or battleships.

Thanks, King. I knew I'd forgotten something in that description. I have 3 battleships in the stack as well.

                A recommended choice.

I played that GOTM and the follow up (Ottoman's) and I found the Sipahi a lot meaner than the Celt unit. Having the Golden Age when I had 2 city cores (means I had built the FP) gave me a huge tech boost as well.

Not bad for a 1.29f vanilla setup.
