  • AU 401: They came down from the Mountains

    Course originally offered at MZO.

"Apolyton University is a school of strategy, where students sharpen their Civ3 skills and share their experiences in a series of thematic games. When playing an Apolyton University game, gaining and sharing knowledge is more important than getting a high score, or even winning the game. Participants are encouraged to share their strategy after the game, and even to try several attempts.

For single-player games we have developed the AU mod, whose main purpose is to challenge the player with a need for deeper strategy. To accomplish that goal, the mod tries to improve the AI and present the player with more strategic decisions, while changing as little as possible." -- alexman

And the original posting from Konquest02 at MZO

"So for all the new players and for all of the AU veterans, here is AU@MZO 401: They came down from the Mountains.

Your assignement for this course is to show 2 things:

    * 1- How your civilization choice helped you win this game. Show how your traits and UU were a large part of your success.
    * 2- You are perched atop a mountain. You need to get down of it. Show how your first move set a strong opening for the rest of your game.

The game is meant to be played with PtW 1.21f. [edit: But can be played in 1.14f with or without the AU Mod.]
    • Standard map size
    • Pangea
    • 80% water
    • Roaming Barbs
    • Everything else random

Most of all, have fun while playing this game. Do not yell at your pixels, it might be a challenge! " -- Konquest02

Spoilers and AARs can be found on MZO: AU 401: Strategy and Spoilers

I have attached a zip file with the original file and the AU Mod version. Sorry Civ 1.29f players, this is PTW only.

Edit: Kon had to make corrections to the original scenario, so for the 2 of you who downloaded it earlier, be sure to get the new version.

Just to clariy... does the statement that the download does not include an AU mod version still hold up? At MZO it appears someone made a new version, is that included in the 'Poly download?

You should use this version. I misassigned the starting locations. My bad... The AU Mod version will be available in a couple of minutes...

Yes, both the PtW 1.21 and PtW 1.21 AU MOD versions are included in the zip file in the first post.

Or you can download the version Konquest just posted above, they are the same.

So how are people who have a non-English-language version of PtW supposed to play this? It should have been created under 1.14f so everyone can play it regardless of whether they're using 1.14f or 1.21f. (Note that not just people who have foreign-language versions are affected either. Some, myself included, are sticking with 1.14f because we're in PBEM games with people who don't have access to 1.21f.)

Also, Apolyton University games are normally preceded by some discussion of what type of game we want to start next. I don't recall seeing anything at all in advance proposing this game idea; at least not on Apolyton. (And just as an extra little nit-pick, why in the world 401 for the course number? It should have been 208, or maybe 301.)

Don't have PTW. So, it's Banana. Sigh.

                    Good points Nathan.

I might have jumped the gun a little with the nomenclature on this one.

Maybe this shouldn't be considered a true AU course as it was developed and posted at MZO originally and as 1.21 exclusively, but the game has the AU ideals, so I decided to make the appropriate links.

Maybe we should return to the 2## or 3## for future games which as it seems 302 and 207 are winding down that we might consider making the next one fairly soon. Do you have any ideas?

We could keep this as 401 and make it stand out as an outlier, which would be easy to do in the history file as well.

BTW, it seems that it's been dedided that future games at MZO will not carry the Apolyton label with them, so this looks to be a one time deal.

Many students go and take courses abroad or in other universities toward the end of their studies. Since this game was originally started at MZO, it (kind of) makes sense to give it a high course number (since you take those toward the end of your degree).

As I posted over at MZO, we should try to keep Apolyton University at Apolyton. I also agree with Nathan that there should be some discussion as to which scenario to play next. That said, Konquest02 has set up a very interesting game, worthy of AU. Once you get this game started, you'll forget all the bureaucracy and just have fun (and that is good).

The BIX file format is the same for 1.14f and 1.21f, so you can load the scenario from either version of PTW.

Thanks, Alex. That sounds like it will save me from a tough decision of whether or not I want to go to the trouble of setting up dual PtW installations just to play the one course.
